Situated on a thousand acres of parkland along the River Nore in County Laois, Abbeyleix House and Farm is a carefully preserved country estate with hundreds of years of history.
The Equestrian Yard Hand assists in the day-to-day running of the yard, ensuring high standards of horse care, stable management, and general maintenance. The role also includes caring for small animals on-site and supporting visits from professionals such as vets and farriers.
Key Responsibilities:
Horse & Yard Duties:
* Carry out daily stable duties, including mucking out, feeding, watering, and bedding down.
* Turn horses out to paddocks and bring them in safely.
* Assist with grooming, rug changing, and general horse care.
* Prepare horses for lessons, exercise, or competition under supervision.
* Maintain a clean, safe, and organized yard, including tack rooms and feed areas.
* Clean and maintain tack and equipment regularly.
* Monitor horse health and behaviour, promptly reporting any concerns to the Yard manager.
Small Animal Care:
* Feed, clean, and provide basic care for small animals on-site (e.g., bunnies, chickens, goats).
* Ensure all animals have clean living areas, fresh water, and suitable bedding.
* Observe and report any changes in health or behaviour to the Yard Manager.
Veterinary & Farrier Support:
* Assist during vet and farrier visits.
* Hold and handle horses safely and calmly during examinations or treatments.
* Maintain accurate records of visits, treatments, and appointments.
* Prepare and clean treatment areas and equipment as needed.
General Duties:
* Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all yard areas, paths, and paddocks.
* Assist with deliveries of feed, bedding, and supplies.
* Carry out general maintenance and repair work (e.g., fencing, sweeping, raking).
* Follow all health, safety, and welfare protocols for staff and animals.
Qualifications & Skills:
* Previous experience working in a similar role with horses essential.
* Confident and competent handling a range of horses safely.
* Basic knowledge of equine first aid, welfare, and nutrition.
* Experience caring for small animals preferred.
* Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
* Good communication skills and a calm, patient manner with animals.
* Full driving licence (advantageous but not essential).
Working Conditions:
* Outdoor and stable environment; work in all weather conditions.
* Early mornings, weekends, and bank holidays required as part of a rota.
