Purpose of the Role
The post holder is responsible for managing the care of patients and the needs of their families, ensuring quality is maintained. The post holder is required to develop additional clinical skills specific to the area of Critical Care nursing and to work as part of the multidisciplinary team to deliver a high standard of care to patients within St James’s Hospital.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The role of the Staff Nurse in Critical Care is constantly evolving and changing due to new therapies, treatments, knowledge, and new technologies. This position is challenging and dynamic, requiring the nurse to have excellent communication skills, clinical judgement, and technical skills.
A Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who is involved in direct patient care with the responsibility of providing the highest standard of evidence based nursing care in partnership with other health care professionals.
The role of the Staff Nurse involves:
Assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating nursing care, using a holistic approach.
Providing patient care, while observing, assessing, and recording symptoms, responses, and progress.
Supervising and assessing student nurses and other junior staff in the clinical area.
Adhering to the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for registered Nurses and Midwives.
Being aware and understanding the need to adhere to Hospital and/or professional standards, policies, and procedures, relevant to their area of practice.
Communicating effectively in the English language, written and spoken, as appropriate to job requirements.
Participating and cooperating with legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety as outlined in the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 and the Hospital Safety Statement.
Ensuring own mandatory learning and training is kept up to date.
Critical Care Foundation Course
Staff Nurses who have no previous critical care experience or who hold no formal education in critical care will be required to undertake the Critical Care Foundation Course. Staff Nurses working in the General Intensive Care Unit and the Keith Shaw Cardiac ICU will undertake this course and will be supported by the Critical Care Nurse Education team.
Foundation Course in Burn Nursing
Staff Nurses working in the National Burns Unit will undertake this program supported by the Critical Care Nurse Education team.
Foundation Course in Thoracic and Lung Cancer Surgery
Staff Nurses working on the Keith Shaw Cardiothoracic Ward will undertake this program supported by the Critical Care Nurse Education Team.
The foundation course in Burn Nursing and foundation course in Thoracic and Lung Cancer Surgery both include ward level care.
The above Role Profile is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties involved and consequently the post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post which may be assigned to them from time to time and to contribute to the development of the post while in office.
Required
Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
AND
Minimum of 18 months’ experience in a Critical Care environment in an acute hospital within the last 2 years. The most recent 12 months of this must be in an Intensive Care Unit for General ICU, Keith Shaw Cardiothoracic ICU & Burns Unit applicants.
OR
Minimum of 1 years’ experience in acute medical/surgical nursing within the last 2 years. The most recent experience must be in an acute hospital for Cardiothoracic Ward and Burns Unit applicants.
Postgraduate Qualification in Intensive Care Nursing/Critical Care Nursing/Cardiovascular Nursing.
Working knowledge of healthcare patient record systems.
