Technical Officer in Geophysics The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is a Government-funded research institute. The Institute is seeking applications for a Technical Officer (TO). The successful candidate will be based in the Geophysics Section of its School of Cosmic Physics and will contribute to technical aspects across the Section. The Geophysics Section oversees a diverse suite of advanced equipment, spanning from land-based geophysical sensors to deep-sea monitoring systems. Working as part of a dynamic team, the successful candidate will maintain and calibrate the equipment, manage inventories, support training, and take part in field campaigns - including international field work in challenging remote environments, and at sea. The role also involves supporting the Irish National Seismic Network ( The field equipment typically includes terrestrial and marine seismometers, hydrophones, fibre optic interrogators (e.g. DAS), telemetry and 12V off-grid power systems. A strong interest and hands-on experience with measurement equipment and related computer systems are essential. While they will work in a team, the successful candidate will demonstrate proven problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues independently. Selection Criteria Applicants will be assessed based on how well they satisfy these criteria: Essential Expertise in electronic and mechanical repair: Proven ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic and mechanical systems, with a passion for hands-on problem-solving Electronics and power systems experience: Demonstrated competency in electronics and 12VDC power systems Fieldwork and travel: Willingness to travel for extended periods (up to weeks at a time), including marine operations Valid drivers licence: Full, clean licence required Technical aptitude: Strong knowledge of general computer hardware & software Communication and teamwork: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and build strong working relationships Independence and adaptability: Capable of working both autonomously and as part of a team, with a proactive and solution-focused approach Organisational skills: Highly organised, detail-oriented, and committed to accuracy, with the ability to plan and prioritise work schedules effectively Flexibility and resilience: Adaptable to change, thriving in a dynamic environment and supporting organisational evolution Desirable Experience in fieldwork under challenging terrain and weather conditions Experience using and maintaining sensors and data loggers to measure small changes, e.g. in the environment. Permanent Salary: €47,448 rising by six annual increment points to €61,844(PPC scale for new entrants to the public service and existing public servants who pay a personal pension contribution). A lower scale will apply where the appointee is an existing civil/public servant who does not pay a personal pension contribution.
