CUH has approximately 800 beds and will increase to 1,000 beds upon the transfer of additional services to the CUH campus. CUH currently employs roughly 4,571 WTE staff across multiple professions and serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science at University College Cork. CUH is a recommended Major Trauma Centre for the Republic of Ireland and offers a wide range of specialties, including Neurosciences, Cardiac Services, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Renal, Internal Medicine, Vascular, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Maxillary‑Facial, Paediatrics, Intensive Care, Oncology, Haematology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Neonatology and Emergency Medicine. It is the tertiary referral centre for the HSE Southern area and the supra‑regional area covering Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny, serving a total population of about 1.1 million.
In 2021, CUH recorded 69,087 ED presentations, 215,529 physical out‑patient attendances, 50,173 virtual out‑patient attendances, 29,966 inpatient discharges and 27,960 day cases.
Health Regions
Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE to deliver health and social care services from 2024, with the HSE South West health region managing all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry, including the South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. This alignment aims to improve accountability and governance, with more services delivered at a local level.

Purpose of the Post
The post holder will plan, develop, coordinate, deliver and evaluate evidence‑based, quality‑assured education and training programmes for registered nurses and midwives, and other staff categories as required. The role encourages specialisation, and all Nurse Tutors are expected to become BLS Instructors and Manual Handling Instructors. Candidates with a Cardiac, Critical Care or Emergency Care background may also become ACLS Instructors.
Opportunities exist to lead programmes in Respiratory Care, Spinal Handling, Oncology, Incontinence, Stroke Management and Pain Management. Education and training programmes must be evidence‑based, engaging and foster collaborative learning, reflection on practice and innovation. The principles of quality and patient safety underpin all programmes.
Qualifications
Registered as a nurse or midwife
Currently BLS Instructor and Manual Handling Instructor (or willingness to obtain)
Experience in a clinical speciality is desirable; ACLS Instructor qualification highly valued
Capacity for flexibility, adaptability and responsiveness within a dynamic team
