Job Title: Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Intellectual Disability (Behaviour Support)

Location: - Limerick.

Report to: - Director of Nursing.

Salary: - €70,000 - €87,500 (DOE)

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

· Accepting accountability and responsibility for clinical decision-making; through the specific management of supported individuals presenting with behaviours of concern who require a high level of support as per agreed caseload.

· Performing a comprehensive health assessment plan and initiating a plan of care with focussed interventions thus enabling supported individual centred outcomes and evaluates their effectiveness, initiating and terminating an episode of care.

· Utilising professional judgement to refer supported individuals to other colleagues when indicated.

· Acknowledging the importance of effective clinical governance structures and lead on clinical governance initiatives within intellectual disability nursing practice.

· Ensuring supported individual safety is paramount throughout their journey within the intellectual disability service

· Demonstrating a proactive approach to behaviour support utilising every opportunity to engage with supported individuals their families and/or carers.

· Advocating for a therapeutic approach to healthcare delivery.

· Facilitate and co-ordinate the development of a multidisciplinary approach to supported individual care, which will benefit the supported individual and accelerate the appropriate care pathway.

· Identify behaviour support priorities and implement strategies for supported individuals within the RANP Scope of Practice.

· Be responsible and accountable for independently coordinating effective referral processes to other health care professional colleagues.

· Initiate timely and appropriate consultation to healthcare professional colleagues according to collaboratively agreed referral pathways.

· Possess a highly developed knowledge of behavioural situations requiring focused interventions and an in-depth understanding of specific interventions deemed as best practice in the management of such situations.

· Examine methods of improving practice through exploration of clinical practice issues with the intellectual disability and collaboratively develop clinical practice guidelines and research/audit initiatives.

· Continue to improve and ensure that relevant personnel receive written information regarding the supported individuals' management and follow-up care.

· Document a complete episode of care in an accurate, timely and complete manner according to the Records Management Policy

· Initiate and implement changes in intellectual disability services in response to supported individual need and service demand.

· Advance the boundaries of intellectual disability nursing practice and articulate and communicate a vision of areas of advanced nursing practice that can be developed beyond the current Scope of Practice.

· Demonstrate a commitment to the development of these areas by identifying areas of nursing that require development as part of the continued advancement of the RANP Scope of Practice and in response to local service need.

· Act as a role model for Advanced Nurse Practice within Intellectual Disability Services.

· Contribute to professional development in intellectual disability nursing and behaviour support policy at local, regional, national and international level.

· Act as an expert nursing resource, providing professional and clinical leadership, strategic direction, expert advice and support to the intellectual disability team.

· Share a vision of clinical practice developments with key stakeholders, communicating with, valuing and enabling their contribution to care.

· Initiate and implement changes locally in response to the needs of supported individuals with behavioural issues requiring interventions as per the RANP Scope of Practice.

· Establish strong communication links with nursing management, multidisciplinary teams who are associated with and contribute to supported individual care.

· Engage in relevant, regular continuous professional development and clinical supervision/case review/reflective practice to maintain the knowledge, skills and competencies to fulfil the RANP role.

· Maintain portfolio of evidence of continued professional development.

· Participate and contribute to clinical governance within and as required by the Sector Manager /Director of Nursing.

· Identify areas relating to caseload/Scope of Practice which require development of clinical standards and lead on such initiatives.

· Lead training /education initiatives and undertake formal and informal teaching in the sites, the classroom and in the wider community, through conferences, seminars and workshops; thus, advocating advanced nursing practice in intellectual disability.

· Promote an understanding of the role of the RANP Intellectual Disability and Behaviour Support among nursing / healthcare professional colleagues and supported individuals.

· Engage with relevant fora which evaluate quality and standards in clinical practice and guide the promotion of effective clinical standards in intellectual disability nursing.

· Develop and maintain links with third level educational institutions.

· Be an active member of the HSE ANP forum.

· Establish networks with other experts in Advanced Nursing Practice e.g. the Irish Association for Advanced Nurse and Midwife Practitioners (IAANMP).

· Take appropriate action on any matter identified that might be detrimental to supported individual's care and the well-being of staff and address any issue inhibiting the safe and efficient provision of care.

· Adhere to all policies, procedures and guidelines related to supported individual safety.

· Identify research priorities in intellectual disability nursing practice in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

· Lead, conduct, disseminate and publish nursing research which shapes and advances nursing practice in intellectual disability.

· Undertake quality assurance audits of the RANP service which will inform service planning, succession planning and quality improvement initiatives for supported individuals.

· Provide annual reports of service delivery to the Sector Manager/DON.

· Participate in and evaluate multidisciplinary audit and use outcome results to improve service provision.

· Develop and review policies in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

· Participate in the development of integrated care pathways where appropriate, utilising evidence-based practice guidelines.

· Proactively forge links with HEI's to participate in research groups and fora which will in turn facilitate the RANP to engage in research and audit.

Qualifications

* Be a Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (RNID) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.
* Have a broad base of clinical experience relevant to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Intellectual Disability.
* Be eligible to undertake a master's degree (or higher) in Nursing or a master's degree, which is relevant, or applicable to Intellectual Disability: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The master's programme must be at Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (Quality & Qualifications Ireland), or equivalent. Educational preparation must include at least three modular components pertaining to the relevant area of advanced practice, in addition to clinical practicum.

OR

* Be currently undertaking a master's degree in nursing (Advanced Practice Pathway) or other which is relevant, or applicable to, Intellectual Disability: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The master's programme must be at Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (Quality & Qualifications Ireland), or equivalent. Educational preparation must include at least three modular components pertaining to the relevant area of advanced practice, in addition to clinical practicum.

OR

* Possess a master's degree (or higher) in Nursing or a master's degree which is relevant, or applicable, to Intellectual Disability: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The master's programme must be at Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (Quality & Qualifications Ireland), or equivalent. Educational preparation must include at least three modular components pertaining to the relevant area of advanced practice, in addition to clinical practicum and if these have not been part of master's degrees the candidate must agree to complete the relevant modules within 2 years.

And

* Undertake 500 hours of supervised advanced clinical practice (minimum) to develop clinical competency.
* Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability and clinical, professional, and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.
* Be a Registered Nurse prescriber of medicinal products as per agreed collaborative practice agreement (CPA) or agree to complete programme within 2 years.
* Have the ability to practice safely and effectively fulfilling his/her professional responsibilities within his/her scope of practice and evidence of continuous professional development.
* Have excellent communication, interpersonal, teamwork and effective caseload management skills.
* Commitment to a person-centred approach, community inclusion and the individual needs of the person.
* Demonstrate ability to work effectively with families and multi-disciplinary team.
* Knowledgeable of the following, Health Act 2007 (Care and Support of Residents in Designated Centres for Persons (Children and Adults) With Disabilities) Regulations 2013, Shaping the Future of Intellectual Disability Nursing in Ireland (2018), Sláintecare

· Experience (Duration & Type) Candidates must possess sufficient administrative capacity to discharge the functions of the role and have management ability and experience including:

* Have a broad base of clinical experience relevant to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Intellectual Disability.

· Professional Knowledge and Skills Possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability and clinical, professional, and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.

* Have the ability to practice safely and effectively fulfilling his/her professional responsibilities within his/her scope of practice and evidence of continuous professional development.
* Have excellent communication, interpersonal, teamwork and effective caseload management skills.
* Commitment to a person-centred approach, community inclusion and the individual needs of the person.
* Demonstrate ability to work effectively with families and multi-disciplinary team.
