JOB SYNOPSIS

The Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering University of Limerick invites applications for the new permanent Full Professor of Sustainable Electrical Engineering. You will have an exceptional record in research, teaching, and academic leadership in sustainable electrical engineering. You will hold a doctorate in electrical engineering or a cognate discipline, with postdoctoral teaching and research experience and a relevant specialisation. You will demonstrate a strong publication record in leading international journals, proven ability to secure competitive research funding, and experience supervising postgraduate students. You will also bring excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills and a collaborative spirit that contributes to the research culture of our department. The successful candidate will demonstrate research excellence and international standing in one or more areas such as power systems, control and automation, signal processing, microelectronics, embedded systems, renewable energy systems (e.g. electrical and power engineering for battery technologies), or high-frequency communications. They will be expected to lead and grow a vibrant research agenda, attract significant research funding, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations both within the university and with external partners across academia, industry, and government. The Full Professor of Sustainable Electrical Engineering will be expected to strengthen and complement the Bernal Institute's energy-related activities by leading the development of environmentally friendly, sustainable electrical energy solutions. This role will drive interdisciplinary collaboration across Bernal research areas, including materials science, biomedical engineering, healthcare technologies and related fields. In addition, the Full Professor will contribute to and further develop the sustainable and marine energy research carried out within the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS) in the Electronics and Computer Engineering Department (ECE). As a Full Professor, the appointee will provide strategic leadership in the ongoing development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in electrical and electronic engineering in the ECE department. They will contribute to the department's teaching mission through high-quality instruction and curriculum innovation, promoting student engagement, experiential learning, and alignment with the needs of industry. A proven record of postgraduate supervision and mentorship is essential. The appointee will play a key role in shaping the future direction of the sustainable electrical engineering activities within UL and the ECE department, supporting early-career academics, contributing to institutional strategy, and representing the university in national and international forums. Engagement with professional bodies, and a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in STEM are also expected. Applicants should hold a PhD in (Sustainable) Electrical Engineering or a related field, with an outstanding track record of scholarly publications, research leadership, attracting large scale research funding, and teaching excellence. Experience in industry collaboration, technology transfer, or commercialisation activities will be considered an advantage. QUALIFICATIONS:
A PhD (level 10NFQ) in Electronic & Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

Evidence of leadership in implementing a focused research activity of outstanding quality and international repute ensuring the activity or programme is aligned to UL's broader research strategy within recognised research institutions.
Evidence of a sustained track record of excellent research outputs demonstrating research leadership as appropriate to the discipline.
Evidence of competitive research funding awards of scale.
Evidence of a minimum of five years post PhD teaching experience related to the delivery of effective teaching, learning, and assessment at a third level institution.
Evidence of PhD supervision (to completion) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and postdoctoral research supervision experience.
Desirable Criteria:
Demonstrable experience/knowledge in the use of current smart and sustainable technologies for teaching and/or research purposes.
Applicants must include:
A research impact statement (up to 2000 words) describing the research that the candidate would envisage undertaking if offered the position at University of Limerick and how it complements existing research directions or offers new directions to the Department.
Teaching philosophy and reflection (up to 500 words) detailing how the candidate would contribute to teaching and learning of the Department.
