Overview

The post of Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is a senior clinical position which reports to the Director of Nursing. The role will be responsible for providing clinical leadership, managing the day-to-day clinical practices in the home, appropriate staff rostering, delegation and supervision, performance and development, clinical governance and assessment of risks. The ADON will work collaboratively with the DON and Healthcare Manager as part of the senior management team in the Nursing Home, providing clear communication and direction and deputising for the DON as required. The position reports to the Director of Nursing / Person in Charge.


Duties And Responsibilities

* Clinical Practice: Ensure the delivery of the highest standards of nursing and social care which meet the individual needs of each resident. This includes:
o Ensuring that home policies and expected clinical standards are read, understood and practiced at all times.
o Conducting ward rounds (including those with GP) to ensure best clinical outcomes.
o Reviewing nursing documentation to reflect care and treatment required by each resident; ensuring assessments and care plans are completed appropriately within agreed timeframes and reviewed as required.
o Reviewing residents at increased risk of pressure sores, falls and other adverse events, and those who are clinically unwell; providing advice and support through clinical practices and documentation to ensure an appropriate management plan.
o Participating in handover and helping troubleshoot clinical and non-clinical issues, escalating to the Director of Nursing as appropriate.
o Ensuring medication practices comply with An Bord Altranais guidelines and liaising with GPs and pharmacy regarding medication reviews and audits; ensuring nursing staff are competent in all aspects of medication management and that they receive education on medication management during induction.
o Undertaking regular MAMS Medicines audits in the nursing home and ensuring effective feedback and action plans.
* Staff Supervision & Education
o Supporting the CNMs in the nursing home with direction, mentorship and regular communication.
o Maintaining a visible presence in clinical areas, monitoring practice and providing constructive feedback; fostering a cohesive team.
o Carrying out regular performance appraisals and development objectives with CNMs, Staff Nurses and Care Assistants (CNM appraisals in conjunction with the DON).
o Training, education, development and induction of nursing and care staff.
o Assessing education needs and implementing in-house training (infection control, palliative and end-of-life care, challenging behaviour, elder abuse).
o Participating in regular communication with staff and developing a team ethos.
o Participating in staff interviews and reviews as appropriate.
o Producing the roster with DON collaboration; monitor agency staffing and maintain staffing level compliance.
* Auditing
o Clinical audits: regularly review residents documentation, ensuring timely assessments, care planning and implementation is documented and reviewed.
o Monitor standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and foster good communication between nurses, carers, housekeeping and catering staff.
o Ensure environmental and hand hygiene audits are carried out and action plans implemented.
o Carry out medication audits, health & safety audits, risk assessments and draw up risk management plans with the DON.
o Audit EpicCare and address documentation issues with CNMs, staff nurses and carers.
* Residents/Relatives - Person Centred
o Interact with and support residents and families daily; be a key point of contact for relatives and visitors in conjunction with the DON.
o Ensure complaints are swiftly dealt with and escalated if needed; document and follow up as required.
o Assist and liaise with the multidisciplinary team, relatives and families.
* Management and Communication
o Be responsible for day-to-day clinical practices in the home; act in the DON's absence.
o Maintain open, honest and clear communication with senior management, direct reports and staff.
o Be part of the senior management team to ensure high-quality care and skilled, conscientious staff.
o Lead by example as the team leader of frontline care staff.
o Supervise staff, monitor drug rounds, address clinical issues and ensure compliance with clinical standards.
* Daily Activities
o Check staff rosters and arrange cover for absences; communicate effectively with staff, residents and relatives.
o Attend handovers daily and review residents' progress.
o Support and develop clinical practice; be hands-on with nurses and carers to improve care delivery.
o Implement Company Health and Safety Policy to safeguard safety and welfare.

Qualifications

* First level registration.
* Registered on appropriate part of Irish live register.
* Evidence of continuous Professional Development.
* Previous management experience.
