Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Medical Physics service, ensuring safe, effective, and high-quality delivery across all clinical areas
Provide expert scientific advice on radiation protection, imaging optimisation, and regulatory compliance
Act as Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) / Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in accordance with statutory requirements
Oversee quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) programmes for all radiological equipment, including diagnostic imaging and MRI
Ensure compliance with national and international standards, legislation, and best practice guidelines
Support the implementation, optimisation, and commissioning of new equipment and technologies
Collaborate closely with Radiologists, Radiographers, and multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care and service delivery
Lead incident investigations related to radiation safety and implement corrective and preventive actions
Develop and review policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures within the department
Manage departmental resources, including staffing, budgeting, and service planning
Provide leadership, mentoring, and training to junior physicists and technical staff
Participate in research, audit, and innovation initiatives to advance clinical practice
Contribute to teaching and continuous professional development programmes within the organisation
Maintain accurate documentation and reporting in line with regulatory and organisational requirements
Requirements
Recognised First or Second Class Honours Degree with Physics as a major subject
OR
Recognised First or Second Class Honours Degree in Electrical / Electronic / Mechanical / Clinical Engineering
Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in Medical Physics / Clinical Engineering
Equivalent qualifications may be considered
Minimum 7 years’ relevant experience, including at least 3 years at senior level, in one or more of the following:
Nuclear Medicine
Radiation Protection Procedures
Clinical Engineering
Radiological Physics
Radiotherapy
Medical Imaging
Registration as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) with the Irish College of Physicists in Medicine (ICPM)
OR eligibility to obtain registration within 12 months
Registration as a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA)
OR eligibility to obtain registration within 12 months
