Purpose of Position: To deliver the Early Learning Initiative's Schools and Afterschool's Coding Club About the project: The ELI Afterschool Coding Club is a community-based computer coding club, aimed at children aged 8-12 years old. This programme is an introduction for children to learn basic programming, electronics and robotics through fun and challenging learning experiences. The Early Learning Initiative was awarded funding from corporate partners to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to STEM subjects, such as mathematics and computer technologies, that would continue to benefit them in second and third level education. Reporting to: Stretch to Learn Programme Coordinator & Assistant Director of the Early Learning Initiative Key Relationships: Stretch to Learn Coordinator Director and Assistant Director of the Early Learning Initiative Early Learning Initiative team National College of Ireland Primary schools and afterschools Volunteers Coding Club Tutor Key Responsibilities: The Coding Club tutor will facilitate the coding programme in primary schools and afterschools with the support of ELI staff and volunteer mentors. The role of the tutor is to provide the children with opportunities to learn about basic programming, electronics and robotics through an introduction to basic programming with 'Scratch' and 'Makeblock' software, games and activities. The tutor is responsible for: Facilitating all the sessions of the coding programme in primary school and afterschool services Support volunteer mentors during sessions to ensure children receive additional support Liaise with the Stretch to Learn Coordinator to implement the Coding Club programme in accordance with the ELI Coding Manual Organising the learning environment and materials in primary schools and afterschools Engaging with parents to achieve the aims of the project and promoting parental involvement throughout the project To provide feedback to the Stretch to Learn Coordinator to regarding non-attendance of participants and identify supports required for participants to attend Attending meetings as required. Working with children according to best practice in a child-centred way Being vigilant in monitoring and responding to incidents of non-accidental injury, suspected child abuse, or developmental delay in line with 'Children's First', the National Child Protection Guidelines Supporting the ELI evaluation process Any other duties as assigned by the Stretch to Learn Programme Coordinator and Director of ELI Skills and Experience Required: Current participation or completion of a third level qualification in relevant computer studies or IT-related subject Familiarity with software 'Scratch' or 'Makeblock'. Experience in working with children and families Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of college personnel, community stakeholders and other outside individuals/organisations Proven capacity to work independently and as part of a team in a cross disciplinary, integrated team, sharing roles and responsibilities Good time management, administrative and organisational skills Excellent behaviour management skills Employment Conditions: Contract: 12 Month Fixed Term Contract, Salary: €33.25 per hour for facilitating (for tutor with or studying a degree) €57.48 per hour for facilitating (for tutor with or studying a masters) €13.50 for meetings Hours: 2 hours contact time per week. Salary rate includes time for preparation and delivery Annual Leave: 8% of hours worked National College of Ireland's mission is to widen participation in higher education and unlock each student's potential.
