Job Description:

St. Joseph's Foundation is a voluntary organisation providing comprehensive services for adults with intellectual disabilities and children with complex needs. Founded in 1968, the Foundation has grown through continuously responding to the needs of people with disabilities and their families.

The Foundation provides services to children and adults. Adults services include day services, residential, respite care, MDT, and home support in the North Cork and South West Limerick region. We have day and residential services in various locations in North Cork and South Limerick, such as Charleville, Dromina, Newtownshandrum, Buttevant, Newmarket, Mitchelstown, and Mallow, in Limerick; Ballylanders, Ballyagran, Bruree, Bruff, Croom, Dromcollogher, Granagh, Kilmallock, and Liskennett.

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST (STAFF GRADE) Permanent Post 35hrs

Childrens Disability Network Team- CDNT 4 North West Cork (Mallow Base)

Applications are invited for a Permanent Staff Grade Speech and Language Therapist position, on a St. Joseph's Foundation led Children's Disability Network Team (CDNT), based in Mallow, Co Cork. This team provides services within an interdisciplinary and family-centred model for children 0-18 years presenting with complex needs, under the National Progressing Disability Services (PDS) Programme. The Speech and Language Therapist is required to provide services within the clinic, home, and school settings.

Candidates registered as Speech and Language Therapists with CORU or 2025 SLT Graduates are invited to apply*

Experience (post-graduate or clinical placement) of working with children with complex needs and/or physical disability, intellectual disability, and/or Autism is desirable

Attainment of dysphagia competencies at undergraduate or postgraduate level is desirable

*Option for 2025 SLT Graduates to commence as SLT Assistant while awaiting CORU registration

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Speech & Language Therapist - Staff Grade

LOCATION: CDNT 4 North Cork : Blackwater House, Mallow

REPORTS TO: Children's Disability Network Manager/ SLT Manager

Commitment: As per Contract

LIASES WITH: Interdisciplinary Team, Families, Staff of St. Joseph's Foundation, Staff of other statutory and voluntary organisations including schools, preschools, primary and acute care

JOB SUMMARY

The Staff Grade Speech and Language Therapy post is a key appointment in the ongoing development and delivery of a comprehensive/effective service for children with complex needs arising from a disability. He/she will contribute to providing a quality service to enable children to realize their potential and do this by working as part of an Interdisciplinary Team in the context of a Family Centered Practice Model.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROFESSIONAL

Attend work the days and hours at the centre(s) to which they are assigned, reporting to the line manager as requested

Demonstrate professional conduct and behaviours by adhering to legal, ethical, and professional practice standards in all aspects of practice as stipulated by CORU and SJF code of conduct policy, ensuring also that professional standards are maintained in relation to confidentiality, ethics, and legislation

Be fully aware of and compliant with current child protection and safeguarding legislation and SJF safeguarding policies and procedures.

Adhere to existing and future SJF and CDNT policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines for the development and maintenance of standards for quality improvement and outcome measurement

Foster and maintain professional working relationships with children and their families, the interdisciplinary team, operational and clinical managers, and other personnel from external agencies such as GPs, SLTs in acute care, or teachers/SNAs, promoting positive engagement, collaborative team working, respect for others, and a culture that values diversity

CLINICAL

Be responsible for managing and prioritising own caseload, and as part of a team with support from the Senior SLT/SLT Manager/CDNM as required

Contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of a tiered model of supports; sharing universal information, delivering targeted trainings and workshops, and providing direct intervention on an individual, group, and consultative basis, both SLT specific and interdisciplinary

Be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of clinical recommendations and programmes in conjunction with IFSP goals, and in accordance with service and professional standards in delivering evidence-informed care and supports

Organise visits to home, school, etc., as appropriate, to determine the child's needs and to plan intervention, in line with the policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines of the service and CDNT

Communicate verbally and/or in writing outcomes of assessments, intervention programmes, and recommendations to parents/carers, and external health and education personnel with parental consent, as well as the child as appropriate, utilising accessible information supports appropriate to the child's communication stage

Maintains each child's electronic file in accordance with the record-keeping policy, ensuring the quality of documentation of all assessments, support plans, case notes, and reports are in accordance with local guidelines and CORU and IASLT professional policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards on record keeping

Attends and participates in team meetings, review meetings, case conferences, etc., communicating and working in an integrated model including the parents/carers and child where appropriate

Organise and facilitate Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs), as per local IFSP guidance document and pathway

Be responsible for the maintenance of relevant standards for own practice, seeking advice and assistance in a timely manner with any assigned duties or issues that are beyond the scope of professional competence, in line with principles of clinical governance

Operate within the scope of Speech and Language Therapy practice as set out by CORU and the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists (IASLT) including policy documents and competencies, and in accordance with the relevant policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines of St. Joseph's Foundation/CDNTs.

If the SLT is expected to work in the areas of Feeding, Eating, Drinking and/or Swallowing (FEDS), they must have the relevant competencies as recommended by the I.A.S.L.T. in Standards of Practice for Speech and Language Therapists on the Management of Feeding, Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia) 2012.

Maintain and regularly update the CDNT waitlists and SLT caseload database, providing statistical data and other information in a timely fashion as requested by the CDNM or SLT Manager.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Identify, in consultation with line management and clinical supervision, own training needs and undertake training where appropriate and required as part of ongoing continued professional development (CPD)

Conduct research & development in the field as agreed with the CDNM and SLT Manager.

Participate in the development and delivery of relevant training and teaching programmes for children, parents/carers, families, others as required and agreed through the line management system.

Actively engage in clinical and professional supervision as agreed with the SLT Manager and CDNM as per CDNT supervision policy, and in conjunction with IASLT and CORU supervision guidelines.

HEALTH & SAFETY

1. Promote a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and, in particular, to comply with employees' obligations as set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 as well as any related policies and procedures within St. Joseph's Foundation as well as those as part of any reconfiguration of services and the Children's Disability Network Team.

2. Be aware of and implement agreed policies, procedures, and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations, and standards

3. Actively participate in risk management issues, identify risk issues to their line manager, and participate in the management of risk including the implementation of controls.

4. Report any adverse incidents in accordance with organisational guidelines

5. Be aware of and become familiar with fire drill procedures, i.e., fire detection, evacuation, and firefighting.

On the termination of employment but before departing from the service, staff members are required to return to the Foundation, via their line manager, all books, reports, memoranda, correspondence, papers, records, reports, files including data held on electronic files and any other documentation, and all other property, including keys, belonging to the Foundation or relating to its business or affairs which are in the possession of a staff member or under his/her control when the employment is terminated.
