Contract: Fixed Term (6 Months), Full-Time (37 hours per week)

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will provide anaesthesia for patients in accordance with the Master/Clinical Director at the Rotunda Hospital. The primary subspecialty is obstetric anaesthesia, but responsibilities also include all aspects of inpatient and outpatient anaesthesia services, pre‑operative assessment, intra‑ and post‑operative care, peri‑partum obstetric care, and critical care (HDU) including inter‑hospital transfers. In addition to clinical duties, the role involves administrative, academic, audit, quality improvement, and educational activities.
Provide anaesthesia for surgical and other interventions.
Deliver peri‑operative care: pre‑operative assessment, intra‑operative care, and post‑operative management and follow‑up.
Participate in pre‑operative assessment clinics and provide analgesia outside theatre as requested.
Engage in teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship levels.
Support administrative and management functions to develop anaesthetic services.
Contribute to audit and clinical governance, research, and clinical trials.
Supervise and be responsible for care provided by non‑Consultant Hospital Doctors.
Participate in selection processes for non‑Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff.
Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams, including obstetricians, gynaecologists, and surgeons, and facilitate transfer of high‑risk patients to higher‑level critical care services.
Eligibility Criteria and Qualifications
Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners (Medical Council of Ireland).
Possession of the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists (FCA) or equivalent.
Inclusion on the Register of Specialists (Medical Council of Ireland).
Up‑to‑date knowledge of routine aspects of anaesthesia practice, especially obstetric anaesthesia.
Registered as a Specialist in the relevant specialty within 180 days of interview.
Fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and in a state of health to render regular and efficient service.
Under 65 years of age if not classified as a new entrant.
Availability to attend emergencies within 30 minutes when on duty at Rotunda or partner hospitals.
Skills, Competencies and/or Knowledge
Advanced (fellowship or equivalent) training in obstetric anaesthesia at the time of appointment.
Clinical leadership in the development of women’s health services, including termination of pregnancy, with responsibility for education, training, organisation, provision, and audit.
Proficiency in anaesthesia for high‑risk patients.
Desirable: point‑of‑care ultrasound and/or transthoracic echocardiography training.
Complementary skills to the existing consultant group, beneficial to future development of services, including pre‑anaesthesia assessment and peri‑operative care pathways (ERAS).
Evidence of effective planning, organising, and resource management skills.
Empathy, respect, and the ability to manage a busy theatre efficiently.
Ability to engage in research, clinical trials, audit, and clinical governance programmes.
