Post-doctoral researcher school of chemistry and sustainability institute

University College Cork (Ucc)

Offer description

36 Months, Fixed Term Full-Time Post Position Summary A position is available for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to work on a new project focused on the monitoring and source apportionment of ambient Particulate Matter (PM) in urban areas of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The researcher will be based in the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC), which is a key research centre within the Sustainability Institute at University College Cork.
The CRAC has been a European leader in atmospheric chemistry research for over two decades and performs a wide-range of research activities which encompass laboratory, field and modelling studies related to atmospheric chemistry, air quality and climate.
This research project is called Partnership for Evidence and Action on Clean Air (PEACE-Air) and is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
The PEACE-Air project aims to establish a cross-border partnership that strengthens evidence-based action on clean air through collaborative research, strategic engagement, and coordinated policy development.
Researchers in CRAC (Prof. John Wenger, Dr Stig Hellebust) are contributing to the PEACE-Air objectives through research in collaboration with project partners in Northern Ireland and Ireland.
The research involves deployment of a X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and other instrumentation for real-time measurements of PM chemical composition and pollutant gases.
The collected data will be used to develop source apportionment models for quantifying the contribution of various sources to ambient levels of PM, e.g., exhaust and non-exhaust vehicle emissions, solid fuel burning and resuspended dust.
This work will require the researcher to travel to field measurement sites in the programme area, so a full driving licence is highly desirable.
Regular communication and co-operation with stakeholders (project partners in PEACE-Air) will also be required.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated person with a high level of initiative, capable of working independently and within a team.
The candidate should have fluent English and excellent communication, organization, planning and interpersonal skills.
Ideally, the candidate will have experience in one or more of the following areas: - Online measurement techniques for determination of PM chemical composition, e.g., an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer for elemental analysis - Statistical techniques used in source apportionment modelling, e.g., positive matrix factorization - Working with large data volumes - Air quality monitoring and associated data analysis - Designing and/or conducting field measurement campaigns in atmospheric science Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI's.
This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher.
Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association Project Title: Partnership for Evidence and Action on Clean Air (PEACE-Air) Post Duration: 36 Months, Full-Time Post Salary: €46,306 - €52,863 (IUA PD1 Salary Scale) For an information package including further details of the post see Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Prof. John Wenger Telephone: Applications must be submitted online via the University College Cork vacancy portal Queries relating to the online application process should be referred to quoting the job-title and project name.
Candidates should apply, in confidence, before 12 noon (Irish Local Time) on Friday 28th of November ****.
Interviews will be held online the week after the closing date for application No late applications will be accepted.
Please note that an appointment to posts advertised will be dependent on university approval, together with the terms of the employment control framework for the higher education sector.
