Standard Duties and Responsibilities
1. Participate in the development of and undertake duties related to the Consultant’s area of expertise, as outlined in the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in accordance with Employer policies.
2. Ensure duties are performed to minimise patient delays and service disruptions.
3. Work within the hospital/agency’s service framework and levels of service as determined by the Employer, with service planning for individual clinical services progressing through the Clinical Directorate or other arrangements.
4. Co-operate with the implementation of the Disciplinary Procedure.
5. Review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan periodically with the Clinical Director or Employer. The plan should be reviewed upon request, and the Consultant may seek internal review of any determinations regarding the plan.
6. Participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and associated management or representative structures, with appropriate training and support provided.
7. Provide consultation within the Consultant’s area of expertise for patients of other Consultants upon request.
8. Ensure, in consultation with the Clinical Director, that adequate medical cover is available at all times, considering the European Working Time Directive for doctors in training.
9. Supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment, and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors under the Consultant’s care.
10. Participate in the selection process for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff, with relevant training provided by the Employer, and involving a representative from the relevant specialty or sub-specialty.
11. Engage in clinical audit and proactive risk management, providing necessary data and information.
12. Assist in producing data and information to validate duties and inform service planning and management.
13. Carry out teaching activities as appropriate.
14. Maintain working knowledge of HIQA standards relevant to the role and comply with associated protocols.
15. Support and participate in sustainable energy, water, and waste initiatives to promote a low-carbon, efficient health service.
16. Act as a spokesperson for the Organisation as required.
17. Engage proactively in communication with internal and external stakeholders.
