Job Overview
A dynamic opportunity has arisen for a Farm Manager to lead the Newford Farm, a state-of-the-art suckler beef demonstration farm in Athleague, Co. Roscommon.
This role is part of a joint project between Dawn Meats and Teagasc, supported by McDonald's, with the goal of showcasing best practices in sustainability and technical efficiency on a commercial suckler beef farm.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure the welfare of the herd through tasks such as calving, maintaining the herd register, monitoring animal performance, and other essential duties.
* Operate and maintain farm machinery, including tractors and implements, to optimize efficiency and productivity.
* Develop and implement effective breeding management strategies, including heat detection and artificial insemination.
* Manage grassland allocation and maintenance to maximize yields and improve overall farm performance.
* Identify and treat basic animal health problems, ensuring the well-being of the herd.
* Collaborate with Dawn Meats and Teagasc staff to host public events on the farm, promoting education and awareness about sustainable farming practices.
* Manage the 200-head winter finishing unit, overseeing feed management and herd health.
* Supervise seasonal and part-time staff, providing guidance and support to ensure the smooth operation of the farm.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
* Hold or demonstrate a Level 5 Advanced Certificate in Farm Administration and/or a related discipline, such as Agriculture.
* Possess skills in grazing management, animal handling, machinery operation, breeding management, animal health and welfare, health and safety, teamwork, and commitment to quality work.
Desired Qualifications and Skills
* Possession of a Level 6 Qualification in Agriculture or a related discipline would be highly advantageous.
* Experience in dairy herd management and proficiency in relevant computer applications would be a distinct asset.
* Strong record-keeping skills and ability to use IT systems, including grass management software.
This role requires the candidate to satisfy legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads, which must continue during employment with Dawn Meats.
