Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital | Job type: Fixed Term
Overview of role
We are recruiting a Clinical Specialist Radiographer of General X-ray at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The post holder will lead, guide and supervise radiographic staff to manage the General Radiology Department and Theatre/Fluoro/Portable Imaging, ensuring effective utilisation of all allocated resources. The Clinical Specialist must demonstrate strong leadership, management skills and core professional competence, including autonomous practice.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Recognise the need for effective management of workload and resources and adapt practice accordingly.
Engage in leadership, creating and promoting healthy working relationships; provide strategic and clinical leadership for an effective, efficient, quality-assured and patient-centred service.
Deputise for the RSM during absenteeism.
Take primary day‑to‑day responsibility for the General and Theatre imaging service and utilisation of resources.
Advise on equipment selection, purchase, replacement, or upgrading.
Contribute to service plans, monitor and report on implementation; maintain accurate clinical data systems per hospital standards.
Carry out general and highly complex radiographic procedures meeting professional standards and legislation.
Engage with consultants to develop specialised view protocols for patient management and surgical decision‑making; update Department handbook as practice changes.
Implement changes based on evidence‑based practice.
Advise on patient scheduling and waiting lists; assist CSR to build booking grids.
Develop and implement operational policies, protocols and guidelines for optimal resource utilisation and systematic audit.
Lead clinical audit in accordance with SI 256 of 2018 and SI 30 2019.
Adapt techniques and equipment for imaging of compromised patients.
Justify and optimise radiographic examinations as a practitioner.
Schedule workflow in both general and specialist areas.
Troubleshoot equipment, manage risk and audit equipment performance.
Report operational issues to the Radiography Services Manager.
Efficiently manage consumables and maintain stock levels.
Assess patient suitability for IV injections, checking renal function and contraindications.
Deliver a continuous learning programme for staff on new techniques and best practice, adhering to ALARA principles.
Supervise and teach newly qualified radiographers, assistants, students and postgraduate students.
Make decisions based on radiographs that may alter patient pathways; alert clinicians or radiologists to abnormalities.
Advise and present on current European and Irish legislation regarding radiation protection, health & safety, and patient safety.
Administer IV injections as per departmental policy (rotational post for trained staff).
Provide care for patients with contrast reactions or other illnesses, following hospital policy.
Ensure patient confidentiality and respect cultural, spiritual beliefs.
Lead and actively participate in multidisciplinary teams, fostering good working relationships.
Maintain radiation safety principles: justification, optimisation (ALARA) and dose limits.
Show flexibility to adapt work patterns and accommodate patient volume increases.
Participate in the Departmental on‑call rota with access to own transport.

Quality & Audit

Set up, maintain and review QA programmes.
Attend weekly huddles to address wins, issues, audits and encourage quality improvement.
Promote team learning, communication and documentation via Microsoft Teams.
Encourage reporting of incidents and learning opportunities through Viclarity.
Maintain accurate records of equipment service, maintenance, downtime and performance.
Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules and support service development initiatives.
Liaise with senior staff on staff rotation to ensure adequate trained personnel.
Investigate complaints, accidents and incidents per hospital policy.
Ensure staff understand and comply with safety questionnaires and infection control policies.
Maintain equipment inspection records for faults and defects.
Provide troubleshooting for imaging and electronic patient systems.

Health and Safety

Assist implementation and maintenance of the departmental quality assurance programme.
Regularly liaise with the physicist on safety and operational issues.
Promote a safe environment for staff and patients.
Maintain knowledge of HIQA standards, infection control and hygiene practices.
Develop a checklist for staff during system breakdowns and power outages.
Support sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives.
Monitor diagnostic reference levels for routine examinations.

Professional / Education

Develop a personal development plan and professional portfolio.
Critically self‑evaluate, conduct evidence‑based research and apply findings clinically.
Maintain and enhance knowledge, skills and aptitudes to meet evolving clinical profiles and legal requirements.
Participate in and deliver CPD activities.
Provide peer support and engage in performance reviews with manager.
Demonstrate resilience, composure, flexibility, openness to change and commitment to professional development.
Manage and develop self and others in a busy environment, evaluating information and making appropriate decisions autonomously within guidelines.

Qualifications & Experience

Degree in Radiography or Diploma of The College of Radiographers.
Registered with the Radiographers Registration Board at CORU.
At least 6 years full‑time post‑qualification clinical experience.
Recognised postgraduate course (IIRRT) or specialised modality experience (desirable).

Salary
€66,248.13 – €78,250.54 per annum (35‑hour week)
