Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The role is based on the five core concepts of the Clinical Nurse Specialist as defined by NCNM 4th edition (2008): Clinical Focus, Education and Training, Audit and Research, and Consultancy.
Clinical Focus
The CNS will have a patient-centered approach, encompassing direct and indirect care activities. Direct care involves assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of care, while indirect care supports these activities.
Direct Care
* Provide telephone support and triage for patients with disease/treatment symptoms.
* Participate in unscheduled reviews of patients presenting with side effects.
* Support families and carers through education and problem-solving.
* Offer outreach support at home.
* Assess referral needs to specialist cancer services and coordinate relevant services.
* Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and participate in patient education.
* Maintain accurate clinical records and demonstrate clinical expertise.
Indirect Care
* Identify and facilitate appropriate referrals for patients with complications.
* Participate in case reviews and use case management approaches.
* Lead in developing evidence-based guidelines and ensure services align with best practices and standards.
Education & Training
* Assist in developing and delivering training for nursing staff.
* Engage in teaching across disciplines and maintain up-to-date care standards.
Audit & Research
* Ensure practice compliance with current evidence-based standards.
* Participate in audits and research activities, collecting relevant data.
* Develop and maintain quality assurance programs and promote research-based practice.
Consultancy
* Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to colleagues and students.
* Contribute to the development of clinical standards and guidelines.
* Build collaborative relationships within and outside the MDT.
Health & Safety
Adhere to organisational and HSE policies, ensuring safety procedures are followed in line with relevant legislation.
Quality, Risk, and Safety Responsibilities
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
* Ensure compliance with safety standards and legislation.
Management/Administration
* Manage caseload effectively and monitor service quality.
* Maintain accurate records and contribute to service planning.
* Support sustainable practices and energy initiatives.
