Applications are invited for the position of Senior Research Co-ordinator- Facilities Manager for the Sustainability Institute.
The appointee will be responsible for safe and efficient research operations within the Institute.
Specifically, the successful candidate will have responsibility for the implementation of the Institute's overall health and safety plan across the Sustainability Institute's Ellen Hutchins and Beaufort Buildings.
Working in collaboration with the Beaufort Building Operations Manager, they will oversee the care and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and services for the Ellen Hutchins building, and provide specific technical support to research groups in the Ellen Hutchins Building.
The appointee will be primarily based in the Ellen Hutchins Building and be the first point of contact for facilities' related items, and Health and Safety within this building.
The appointee will work directly with the Beaufort Building Operations Manager regarding the Sustainability Institute's Health and Safety requirements in line with UCC policies.
The appointee will report to the Sustainability Institute Director who will act as their line manager.
Suitably qualified and interested candidates will be experienced in operating within a science and engineering environment.
The role requires excellent communication skills both at a local level with colleagues and externally with clients and academic partners.
The role requires flexibility regarding the allocation of specific duties and may be further defined and developed in line with strategic developments within the Sustainability Institute.
Lead and coordinate health and safety in relation to research and operational activities within the Sustainability Institute
Ensure the implementation of the Sustainability Institute Safety Statement
Manage safety reporting within the Sustainability Institute and support accident/incident investigations as required.
Co-ordinate H&S training and emergency management in the Sustainability Institute Ellen Hutchins and Beaufort Buildings
Achieve improved identification, assessment, and management of safety hazards across both the Ellen Hutchins Building and the Beaufort Building in collaboration with the Beaufort Building Operations Manager
Manage the Health and Safety Budget for the Sustainability Institute
Provide regular reports to the Sustainability Institute Executive Committee on Health and Safety
Conduct regular H&S audits of offices, laboratories, workshops, and stores in Ellen Hutchins Building
Complete hazard identification and risk assessments for generic Institute activities, and support research groups in the Ellen Hutchins Building to develop risk assessments and review of the same.
Input to H&S aspects of funding proposals, and changes in infrastructure and facilities in the Ellen Hutchins Building.
Maintain an up-to-date inventory of Institute risk assessments/SOPs
Oversee the management of laboratories, facilities and equipment within the Ellen Hutchins Building e.g. preparation of labs for occupation, decommissioning of labs, maintaining of chemical and equipment inventories, and facilitating shared services between research groups.
To manage renovation projects within Ellen Hutchins Building laboratories and building in close cooperation with UCC Buildings and Estates.
To ensure that office and laboratory space within the Ellen Hutchins Building is efficiently used and that workspaces are clean and safe.
To open and close the Ellen Hutchins building as required and be an out of hours contact point.
Carry out procurement for equipment and services in line with University Procurement policy.
Ensure the efficient management of records, including inventories and stock control of chemicals, laboratory apparatus and equipment, and equipment preventative maintenance.
Support postgraduate researchers and research projects within the Sustainability Institute Ellen Hutchins Building
Develop and write SOPs relating to the operation of the Sustainability Institute equipment, laboratory procedures, safety procedures etc.
Maintain a sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment in the Sustainability Institute Ellen Hutchins Building.
Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to meet with health and safety legislative requirements and Institute/University standards, to include maintenance and update of safety documentation.
Monitor and ensure compliance with health and safety rules and regulations and participate in the provision of safety advice and training across both the Sustainability Institute Beaufort Building and Ellen Hutchins Building.
Ensure compliance in areas relating to the management of chemical agents and chemical waste and the control of hazards and related risk in a chemical sciences laboratory environment.
Purchasing consumables, chemicals, equipment and supplies and maintenance of an inventory of appropriate laboratory supplies and equipment for ordering.
Implementation of and monitoring of safety procedures and risk assessments within laboratories and workshops.
Liaise with other areas within UCC (e.g. ERM, B&E etc.) and services as necessary, to assist with laboratory and other infrastructural changes and health and safety compliance.
Liaise with other stakeholders both within the University and externally, for example in relation to collaborative research interactions or provision of technical services.
Contribute to Sustainability Institute outreach activities.
Participate in Institute and University committees as required.
Support the management of the Institute Asset Register.
Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Director of the Sustainability Institute
Duties will be reviewed and revised on an ongoing basis to meet the technical support needs of the Sustainability Institute.
Specific Requirements
Applicants must hold at least a Master's degree qualification in a related discipline.
A minimum of 8 years demonstrable experience of working to a high level in a laboratory or related work setting.
A minimum of 5 years' experience in Health and Safety
Experience and competency in good laboratory practices, laboratory safety, and risk assessment.
Experience in the preparation and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.
Experience with procurement of consumables and materials, order control and tracking of stock control and inventory.
Demonstrated experience of supporting planned and unscheduled maintenance of systems in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work both on own initiative and as part of a team.
Demonstrated knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety regulations and procedures as pertains to laboratory.
Demonstrated experience of deployment of best-known practice related to laboratory environments.
Prior experience in tutoring, demonstrating, or engaging with undergraduate students and researchers, or equivalent, at third level or industrial setting.
Good project management skills, highly organised, flexible, and capable of working collaboratively and independently.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, computational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task.
Evidence of willingness and commitment to provision of technical support across a broad range of levels with a variety of situations, individuals, and groups.
Evidence of willingness to perform routine or specialised tasks according to specific guidelines.
Evidence of participation and contributions to committees related to improved quality of health and safety.
A commitment to skills development through relevant training.
PhD in a relevant related area.
Additional qualifications/training in health and safety, laboratory management, or project management.
Experience in space management tracking and optimisation
