Itinerant ESL Paraprofessional (Bilingual) 2023-2024 SY | Birmingham City Schools
Paraprofessionals at ESL sites work with a large number of non-English-speaking students and parents. In addition to helping school personnel communicate with families, paraprofessionals tutor students and improve family engagement by communicating with families in a language they can understand.
Responsibilities
* Uphold school rules, policies, and procedures.
* Support the efficient and effective operation of the school as directed by the Principal.
* Respect the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and staff.
* Foster positive student attitudes.
* Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state & federal rules & regulations.
* Engage in professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics and leadership.
* Report for duty at least 15 minutes before school opens and remain at least 10 minutes after close unless other hours are specified.
* Plan regularly with the assigned teacher.
* Tutor individuals and groups of students as assigned.
* Assist the teacher in student testing activities as assigned.
* Maintain charts and records of students’ performances and accomplishments as assigned.
* Assist the teacher in preparing materials for a positive learning environment.
* Perform clerical tasks including inventory, filing, and typing; operate audiovisual equipment; care for equipment and materials.
* Assist the teacher with basic physical needs of students.
* Take necessary precautions to support students’ study and welfare.
* Attend and participate in individual, school, and system professional development activities.
* Maintain cooperative relationships with school staff, parents, and the community.
* Perform other duties during school hours as assigned by the principal to ensure safe and effective operation of the school.
* Ensure proper communication in Spanish and English between parents and the school.
* Promote good public relations for the school system with the general public.
* Maintain confidentiality of all school-related information.
* Follow Board of Education policies.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
* Bilingual in English and Spanish.
* Must have completed two (2) full years of college credit hours or earned an Associate’s degree.
* Aptitude and skills for the work to be performed.
* Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may require.
