We are seeking a
passionate, experienced nurse
to join our team as a Trainer.
Ability West provides a wide range of high-quality services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism across Galway City and County. Services provided are day, residential, short breaks, community supports, rehabilitative training and multi-disciplinary supports. The Role
The Trainer is responsible for ensuring that all staff are
competent and confident in delivering safe, high-quality care
to adults and children with intellectual disabilities. This includes coordination and delivery of
mandatory and clinical training
.
This role ensures that the organisation meets
HIQA regulations, HSE standards, and best practice in clinical education
, so that staff are equipped to
enable people supported to live safe, fulfilling lives
.
Key Responsibilities
Training Coordination & Delivery
* Develop, organise, and deliver mandatory training programs, including medication, clinical skills, first aid, and other relevant trainings
* Ensure all training meets HSE guidance and HIQA standards
* Maintain accurate records of staff training and competency assessments
* Provide ongoing support and mentorship to staff to build clinical confidence
Compliance & Governance
* Monitor staff compliance with mandatory training requirements
* Support audit preparation for HIQA inspections and internal governance processes
* Contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures related to clinical training
Collaboration & Staff Support
* Work closely with line managers, HR, and service managers to identify training needs
* Provide advice and guidance on clinical best practice
* Support new staff during induction and probation periods on clinical skills
Professional Development
* Keep up to date with current clinical practice, HIQA standards, HSE guidelines, and adult/child intellectual disability care developments
* Share knowledge and skills across the organisation
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered Nurse (RPN / RN) with An Bord Altranais / NMBI
* Experience working with adults and/or children with intellectual disabilities
* Experience in clinical training, education, or staff development
* Knowledge of HIQA regulations and HSE guidelines
* Strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Skills & Competencies
* Ability to deliver engaging, practical, and relevant training sessions
* Knowledge of adult learning principles and competency-based assessments
* Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
* Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams
* Commitment to person-centred, safe, and inclusive care
