The Role
The Health, Safety, Quality, Environment & Sustainability Director (HSQE&S) is a senior
leadership role with strategic and operational responsibility for embedding best-in-class HSQE
and sustainability practices across Glanua's operations in Ireland and the UK.
Reporting to the Executive Team, the role provides expert leadership, governance, and
assurance that Glanua operates safely, responsibly, and sustainably, while meeting all
regulatory, contractual, and ethical obligations. The HSQE & Sustainability Director will drive
a proactive culture of continuous improvement, risk management, and environmental
stewardship, ensuring HSQE and sustainability are integral to business strategy, project
delivery, and decision-making.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance
Develop, own, and deliver Glanua's HSQE and Sustainability strategy, ensuring
alignment with corporate objectives, growth plans, and client expectations.
Embed HSQE and sustainability considerations into business planning, investment
decisions, and operational execution.
Act as the principal HSQE & Sustainability advisor to the Board and Executive Team,
providing clear insight on risks, performance, and improvement opportunities.
Champion a strong safety, quality, and sustainability culture across all levels of the
organisation.
Health & Safety Leadership
Provide strategic oversight of occupational health and safety management systems,
policies, procedures, and standards to achieve a zero-harm culture.
Ensure full compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation, codes of
practice, and client requirements across Ireland and the UK.
Lead and oversee the investigation of significant incidents, near misses, and highpotential
events, ensuring robust root cause analysis and effective corrective and
preventive actions.
Promote behavioural safety, workforce engagement, and continuous improvement in
safety performance.
Quality Management
Establish, implement, and continuously improve robust Quality Management Systems
in line with ISO 9001 or equivalent standards.
Ensure consistent application of quality processes across projects, functions, and
supply chain partners.
Monitor performance, conduct management reviews, and drive corrective actions to
enhance delivery excellence and customer satisfaction.
Environmental Management
Lead the development and implementation of environmental management systems
and compliance frameworks aligned with ISO 14001.
Ensure adherence to all environmental legislation, permits, and regulatory
requirements.
Identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks associated with construction,
operations, and supply chain activities.
Promote best practice in environmental protection, biodiversity, pollution prevention,
and resource efficiency.
Sustainability & ESG Leadership
Define and deliver measurable sustainability objectives, including carbon reduction,
energy efficiency, waste minimisation, water stewardship, and circular economy
initiatives.
Lead the integration of sustainability principles into project delivery, procurement, and
asset management.
Oversee Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, disclosures, and
performance monitoring in line with recognised frameworks and stakeholder
expectations.
Engage with clients, regulators, supply chain partners, and internal teams to promote
and enhance Glanua's sustainability leadership.
Compliance, Audit & Risk Management
Lead internal and external HSQE and sustainability audits, ensuring findings are
addressed and improvements embedded.
Monitor changes in legislation, standards, and industry best practice, ensuring policies,
systems, and training are kept up to date.
Provide assurance to senior leadership on compliance, risk exposure, and
organisational resilience.
People Leadership & Culture
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing HSQE and Sustainability team, fostering
capability, accountability, and professional growth.
Build strong collaborative relationships across operations, engineering, commercial,
and project teams.
Influence and support leaders and managers to take ownership of HSQE and
sustainability performance within their areas of responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Minimum of 10 years' experience in a senior HSQE and/or Sustainability leadership
role, ideally within engineering, construction, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
Degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in Environmental Science, Occupational Health &
Safety, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Professional qualifications and certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO Lead Auditor,
IEMA, or equivalent are highly desirable.
Extensive knowledge of HSQE legislation, standards, and best practice across Ireland
and the UK.
Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering strategic HSQE and
sustainability programmes at an organisational level.
Strong leadership, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to
operate credibly at Board and Executive level.
Excellent analytical, reporting, and communication skills, with a data-driven approach
to performance management.
