The ‘Zendesk Analytics Prototyping’ (ZAP) team is seeking an experienced Staff Data Engineer to support its mission of enhancing CRM measurements and insights, promoting a data-centric approach to customer support tools and operations. The team builds and maintains detailed, high-quality datasets to develop insights that improve Zendesk’s support operations.
The role involves partnering with Software Development Engineers and Business Intelligence Engineers to develop high-quality data pipelines and manage the team’s data lake. The candidate will work collaboratively, applying best practices throughout the software development lifecycle, and will focus on developing curated datasets using architectural and data modeling standards. The primary technologies include Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, and Terraform for Data Warehouse solutions.
What you’ll be doing:
1. Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to understand business requirements, define analytics outcomes, and design data models.
2. Develop, automate, and maintain scalable ELT pipelines in the Data Warehouse for reliable reporting.
3. Design and build ELT-based data models using SQL and dbt.
4. Identify and implement process improvements, automate manual tasks, and optimize data delivery.
5. Work with data and analytics experts to enhance data system functionality.
What you bring to the role
Basic Qualifications:
* 8+ years of experience in building and maintaining data pipelines and ETL processes in big data environments.
* Extensive SQL experience, especially in data modeling and analysis.
* Hands-on experience with dbt and knowledge of data modeling methodologies like Kimball and Inmon.
* Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Java, or Scala.
* Experience with cloud columnar databases (Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Snowflake) and query writing in SQL.
* Knowledge of data transformation processes, data structures, metadata, and workload management.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills.
* Proactive problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in ambiguous situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar cloud data warehouses.
* Familiarity with AI tools for data analysis and transformation.
* Completed projects utilizing dbt.
* Understanding of Lean/6 Sigma principles and CRM analytics.
