The Senior Electrical Project Engineer – Solar will act as the internal technical authority for solar PV electrical engineering and will manage their own projects as Project Engineer, with responsibility for safety, quality, programme, subcontractors, and technical delivery from contract award through to final handover. This is a keystone hire for the business and carries real ownership, influence, and visibility.Core outcomes• Solar projects are electrically well designed, compliant, buildable, and delivered right first time.• Projects are delivered safely, to programme, and to agreed quality standards.• Engineering ownership improves cost certainty, reduces rework, and limits technical risk.• Subcontractors are well managed and held to Woodco standards.• Tenders and proposals are technically robust and commercially informed.• Woodco's technical and delivery reputation in solar PV is strengthened.Key accountabilitiesTechnical leadership and design ownership• Own and lead electrical design for commercial and industrial solar PV projects, including rooftop, ground mount, and hybrid systems.• Produce, review, and approve electrical designs, calculations, single line diagrams, layouts, cable sizing, protection, earthing, and grid compliance documentation.• Ensure full compliance with Irish and EU standards, ESB Networks requirements, and applicable codes of practice.Project engineering and project management• Act as Project Engineer with end to end responsibility for assigned projects.• Plan and manage programme, sequencing, and technical delivery of works.• Coordinate and manage electrical and civil subcontractors.• Chair site meetings as required and ensure actions are tracked and closed.• Manage technical changes and variations in coordination with the commercial team.Safety, quality, and compliance• Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with Woodco's safety management system and statutory requirements.• Review and approve RAMS, method statements, and technical submittals.• Monitor quality on site and ensure works meet design intent and specification.• Ensure inspections, testing, commissioning, and certification are completed and recorded.Project controls and continuous improvement• Apply disciplined project controls including risk management, change control, and impact assessment on cost and programme.• Identify recurring delivery or quality issues and implement corrective and preventive actions.Sales and pre contract technical support• Support the sales team during tender and pre contract stages with authoritative technical input.• Review specifications, identify risks, and shape compliant and competitive technical solutions.• Participate in technical meetings with clients and consultants where required.Authority and interfaces• Authority to approve or reject electrical designs and technical solutions on solar projects.• Authority to direct subcontractors on technical, safety, and quality matters within project scope.• Direct interface with clients, consultants, utilities, inspectors, and subcontractors.• Close working relationship with the Solar Contracts Manager, site teams, procurement, commercial, and safety functions.Experience and qualifications• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.• Approximately 4 to 5 years post qualification experience with strong solar PV project exposure.• Proven experience managing projects on site, including subcontractors.• Strong understanding of ESB Networks grid connection processes and Irish compliance requirements.• Working knowledge of HV & MV voltage switchgear and transformers as part of utility scale and commercial solar installations.• Experience of subcontractor negotiations and procurement.• Strong knowledge of HSE and PSDP/PSCS obligationsSkills and attributes• Familiarity with Microsoft, solar project management tools and workflows.• Technically exceptional with high personal standards.• Ability to read, interpret, and review solar design documentation, including drawings, schematics and product technical specifications.• Comfortable owning projects and making decisions.• Strong organisational and coordination skills.• Safety and quality focused.• Confident communicator able to challenge constructively.Why this roleThis role suits a standout engineer who wants genuine responsibility for both engineering and project delivery.
