Consultant Anaesthesiologist Permanent Fulltime Ref No:2025/133 Job Title and Grade Consultant Anaesthesiologist.
Permanent, Full Time.
Closing Date 29th October 2025 Location of Post 37 hour per week commitment to the Rotunda Hospital.
This is a Public Only Consultant Contract 2023.
Details of Service In the Rotunda Hospital, the Department of Anaesthesiology provides a full anaesthesiology service with participation in an oncall rota.
This service includes preoperative assessment, intra/postoperative care, peripartum obstetric care including epidural analgesia and critical care (HDU) including interhospital patient transfer.
Additional roles include administrative, academic, audit, quality improvement and educational activities.
The successful applicant will be involved in the provision of anaesthesia to patients as agreed with the Master/Clinical Director in The Rotunda Hospital.
The principal subspecialty will be Obstetric Anaesthesia, but will encompass all aspects of inpatient and outpatient anaesthesia services.
The Rotunda Hospital maintains a strong clinical partnership with the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) and there are opportunities for shared sessional responsibilities between these two healthcare services as per POCC 2023.
Reporting Relationship The Consultants reporting relationship and accountability for the discharge of his/her contract is to the Master / Chief Executive Officer of the hospital through his/her Clinical Director.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities Standard Duties and responsibilities
a)To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultants area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer.
This will focus on anaesthesia for both obstetrics and gynaecology patients and encompasses preassessment services.
Termination of pregnancy services are integrated into ambulatory gynaecology services.
b)To deliver preassessment and perioperative care of high risk patients.
c)To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
d)To work within the framework of the hospital service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer.
Service planning for individual clinical services will be progressed through the Clinical Directorate structure or other arrangements as apply.
e)To cooperate with the implementation of Managerial Procedures.
f)To formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer periodically.
The Clinical Directorate Service Plan shall be reviewed periodically at the request of the Consultant or Clinical Director / Employer.
The Consultant may initially seek internal review of the determinations of the Clinical Director regarding the Service Plan.
g)To participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and in such management or representative structures as are in place or being developed.
The Consultant shall receive training and support to enable him/her to participate fully in such structures.
h)To provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultants area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request.
i)To ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive.
j)To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultants care.
k)To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate.
The Employer will provide training as required.
The Employer shall ensure that a Consultant representative of the relevant specialty / subspecialty is involved in the selection process.
l)To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures.
m)To participate in and facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform planning and management of service delivery.
The person appointed shall perform the following duties appropriate to the office: The new appointee will participate in the Anaesthesia oncall rota at the Rotunda Hospital.
Duties also includes: Provision of anaesthesia for patients attending for surgery or other interventions.
Provide perioperative care for surgical patients.
This entails preoperative assessment, intra operative care and postoperative management and follow up for patients.
Be involved in the preoperative assessment clinics.
Provide anaesthesia and analgesia outside of theatre as requested.
Be involved in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced fellowship levels.
Participate in administrative and management functions as required to support the provision and development of anaesthetic services.
The potential for crosssite sessional responsibilities for the appointed Consultant Anaesthesiologist will facilitate: participating in MDT to promote patient care across both institutions: direct consultation with Consultant Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Surgeons and other MDT partners.
facilitate transfer of highrisk patients for diagnostics and clinical care provision including critical care (e.g.
interhospital transfer to higher order critical care services).
all elements of comprehensive anaesthesiology service provision required in MMUH, and specifically relating to operative care of obstetric trauma, cancer and placenta accreta spectrum patients.
o)Support other duties or roles as may arise which are part of the functions of the department.
The above is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties involved and consequently, the post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post which may be assigned to him/her from time to time and to contribute to the development of the post while in office.
Eligibility Criteria Qualifications and/ or experience Eligibility Criteria, Qualifications and/ or Experience Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered and The possession of the FCA or an equivalent thereto and Inclusion on or eligibility to be included on the Register of Specialists maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland Demonstrate up to date knowledge of routine aspects of anaesthesia practice, with particular emphasis on obstetrical anaesthesia.
Entry to competition / recruitment process No candidate will be appointed as a Medical Consultant unless (s)he is registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland.
Successful candidates must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant Specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland within 180 days of the day of interview.
Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate.
Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.
Health A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character Age Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 2004).
A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs.
Other requirements specific to the post To be available to attend emergencies within 30 minutes when on duty, either at the Rotunda or its partner hospitals as required.
Skills, competencies and/or knowledge Advanced (fellowship or equivalent) training in obstetric anaesthesia at the time of taking up the appointment.
Applicants will be expected to provide clinical leadership in development of womens health services including termination of pregnancy and have responsibility for education, training, organisation, provision, and audit of services.
Skilled in the provision of anaesthesia to highrisk patients.
Pointofcare ultrasound and/or transthoracic echocardiography training would be desirable.
Possess skills complimentary to the existing consultant group and beneficial to the future development of services including preanaesthesia assessment services and perioperative care pathways (ERAS) within the departments and hospitals.
Demonstrate up to date knowledge of routine aspects of anaesthesia practice, with particular emphasis on obstetrical anaesthesia.
Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills including awareness of resource management and importance of value for money.
Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect.
Demonstrate evidence of ability to manage a busy theatre effectively.
Demonstrate an ability to engage in research and clinical trials.
Demonstrate an ability to participate fully in audit and clinical governance programme.
