Overview of role:
The role of the Theatre Healthcare Assistant is to support the nursing team and consultants within Theatre. The role involves preparing Theatres for surgery, assisting in the transfer of patients to and from Theatre, and ensuring that the Theatre environment is always clean and sterile.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
General:
* Ensure correct equipment is in place for each procedure daily.
* Ensure that the correct cleaning solutions and equipment are in each sluice room.
* Ensure that all operating tables and trolleys are cleaned.
* Ensure that all trolleys are dressed and ready in reception for patient arrival and after each procedure, they are cleaned and dressed accordingly.
* Liaise with the Anaesthetic nurse regarding specific requirements for Theatre Lists.
* Transport patients into the anaesthetic rooms, from Day Surgery, and In-patient Wards.
* Inform Nurse Manager of any special patient considerations upon collection from theatre.
* Position the patient appropriately for the procedure.
* Assist surgeons and scrub nurses in preparing the patient for surgery.
* Transfer patients post-procedure to their beds.
* Transport patients to recovery.
* Communicate patient queries to the clinical manager.
* Ensure theatres are cleaned and prepared for the next case, including cleaning equipment and floors.
* Assist clinical staff in maintaining high standards of patient care.
* Liaise with the scheduler for upcoming patient lists and transportation arrangements.
* Report unresolved queries or complaints to the Clinical Manager.
* Act as a role model, promoting UPMC Kildare Hospital's mission and values.
* Participate in appraisal and personal development planning annually.
* Respond to patient queries, ensuring patient comfort.
* Transport stock and specimens as needed.
* Manage supplies, including linen, cleaning products, and pharmacy supplies.
Professional Accountability and Development:
* Stay professionally updated and ensure care aligns with current research and evidence-based practice.
* Support staff development and comply with statutory rules and legislation.
* Uphold standards of care and act as a positive role model.
Quality & Audit:
* Participate in clinical audits and research, analyzing and reporting findings.
* Assist in local audits for accreditation and work with the Quality and Patient Safety team.
Health and Safety:
* Follow hospital policies on Fire, Infection Control, and Health & Safety regulations.
* Identify risks and report incidents accordingly.
* Maintain a duty of care for all staff, patients, and visitors.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Relevant FETAC Level 5 Qualification.
* At least 1 year experience in a similar role.
* Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
* Effective communication skills.
