The Vacancy

This role is pivotal in managing a diverse portfolio of P&I claims for owners and charterers, ensuring swift, cost-effective resolutions that meet Member needs. You will assist with strategy, provide expert guidance to the team, foster strong relationships with Members and brokers, and collaborate across departments to deliver exceptional service.


What will you be doing?

* Handling a high-volume and variety of P&I claims, with a focus on Personal Injury/ People Claims for owners and charterers in accordance with P&I policies and procedures; ensuring claims are resolved in an efficient and cost-effective manner to the satisfaction of the Member.
* Maintaining control of strategy on P&I claims taking input where necessary, but not ceding control, to external advisors.
* Ensure regular, accurate and timely reporting to the Head of P&I Claims in the relevant geographical sector on new P&I claims and developments on claims in line with procedural requirements and any triggers advised from time-to-time.
* Managing relationships with Members and brokers, ensuring they receive the highest levels of service.
* Mentoring, supervising and managing colleagues working within the P&I Claims function within the Sector, as required by the Head of P&I Claims.
* Close collaboration with colleagues working within the FD&D and Underwriting functions in the Sector, as well as with Loss Prevention, in terms of Claims Executive responsibilities.
* Preparing agendas, reports, and informing the Sector of any significant developments, as required by the Head of P&I Claims.
* Working closely with the Head of P&I Claims and other colleagues, as required, to support any business development activities and networking with Members and customers (locally and overseas).
* Supporting the Head of Sector and Head of P&I Claims to build and maintain a high-performing and inclusive team environment, including ensuring workloads are well managed and protecting the wellbeing of colleagues, while collaborating with our enabling functions.
* Maintaining a detailed understanding of, and as appropriate acting in accordance with company-wide, functional, and sectoral rules, policies, guidelines, and procedures.
* Demonstrating and role modelling the highest levels of behaviour.
* Actively contributing to claims initiatives and Expertise Teams.
* Settling third party P&I claims at the most economic figure possible, in accordance with the Rules and the Member’s Terms of Entry.
* Estimating P&I claims promptly and in accordance with the procedures.
* Reviewing monthly the schedule of all estimated claims to ensure they are properly recorded and estimated within guidelines.
* Appointing lawyers, surveyors, consultants and correspondents and to receive and evaluate critically advice received.
* Notifying Reinsurers and making recoveries from both the pool and the excess reinsurers, or other contractual parties where appropriate.
* Ensuring that Members are kept adequately informed at all stages of a claim and understand both their and the Club’s position in any situation.
* Organising files appropriately and in accordance with procedures.
* Reporting internally as required and in accordance with procedures.
* Carrying out his/her duties in accordance with the procedures applicable to the Claims Function.
* Participating in out of hours emergency telephone rota and respond to general claims enquiries by Members and correspondents at all times if requested.


About you


Skills/Qualifications/Experience

* Educated to degree level
* Experience in Claimant or Defendant Personal Injury claims, either as a solicitor (or equivalent) or as a claims adjuster
* Willingness to undertake IG PANDIQ exams or read IG PANDIQ material where the material is relevant to the role
* Legal knowledge (law degree or equivalent), technical expertise (mariner) or prior experience within the maritime industry preferred but not essential
* Understanding of the basics of P&I claims and the P&I insurance industry
* Some understanding of P&I Rules and integrated Claims Department Procedures
* Basic knowledge of shipping terms and common ship operations
* Basic knowledge and experience in dealing with P&I/Non-P&I matters


Technical & Soft Skills

* IT Literate with the ability to quickly adapt to new systems
* Efficient and effective administration skills
* Ability to assist with cases in a controlled, efficient and cost-effective manner
* Good planning and organisational skills with the ability to cope with demanding workloads
