What you can expect in a typical day
The Functional Safety Engineer is accountable for all lifecycles associated with Safety Instrumented Systems in support of Technical, Maintenance, Operations, HSE and Capital Projects. This extends to informing the organization of new discipline legislation and auditing compliance with IEC 61511, driving company awareness, and ensuring implementation. This is to ensure functional safety is maintained and improved where possible across the site.
Key Responsibilities
* Accountable for reviewing and maintaining SIS/Functional Safety documents.
* Accountable for providing functional safety expertise for Process Safety Studies, e.g. PHAs, HAZID’s/HAZOPs, SIL reviews and LOPAs.
* Provide functional safety training and guidance across all disciplines onsite.
* Plan/coordinate all necessary functional safety activities encompassing the life cycle of the product, while also defining project responsibilities regarding functional safety (safety plan).
* Create/publish reports regarding the functional safety status monthly for KPI reports.
* Prepare Safety requirements, Functional safety assessment, Site acceptance test and proof test procedures.
* Provide support during commissioning of functional safety systems.
* Perform safety validation, re‑validation and verification activities using ExSILtia software.
* Participate in risk assessment activities as the Functional safety SME related to functional safety.
* Assist the Maintenance Department in addressing Functional Safety issues including management and updating of existing proof test procedures and technical support for replacement of SIL rated equipment.

Education and experience
* Degree qualified Electrical/Functional Safety Engineer with experience within refining or a similar industry. Additional qualification or experience in Instrumentation, ATEX or related experience is highly desirable.
* Comprehensive understanding of Functional Safety within Electrical networks, Instrumentation, safety systems, and process control systems equipment used within refining or industrial operations.
* Clear understanding of Functional Safety legislation, industry drivers and regulatory environment.
