Position Summary
We seek a Research Assistant (Technical) to perform wet-lab work including next-generation sequencing library preparation, short-chain fatty acid, and metabolite analysis. The candidate will participate in an industry-funded project involving microbiologists and clinical teams to investigate how probiotics promote health. Responsibilities include working with human samples and archiving these samples. The successful candidate will contribute to all laboratory aspects to meet project goals.
UCC is an accredited research organization and can host non-EEA nationals for research purposes.
Project Title: Industry funded project on gut health and the microbiome
Post Duration: 12 Months, Full-Time
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Support the research project under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
2. Perform technical duties supporting research activities.
3. Review work assignments and develop plans with the Principal Investigator.
4. Maintain lab notebooks and reports.
5. Collect data, conduct research, and maintain records.
6. Modify laboratory procedures as needed.
7. Order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.
8. Set up instruments and operate laboratory equipment.
9. Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
10. Maintain inventory of materials and equipment.
11. Ensure health and safety in the laboratory.
12. Perform related duties incidental to the work.
13. Carry out additional duties within the scope of the post.
14. Perform sequencing library preparation, fatty acid, and metabolite analysis.
15. Curate human samples in a bio-storage facility.
16. Work well within a team and report to stakeholders professionally.
17. Contribute to public engagement and science dissemination activities.
Specific Requirements
The candidate should have:
1. A graduate qualification (BSc or MSc) in a relevant field.
2. Undergraduate laboratory experience.
3. Ability to use standard lab equipment and techniques.
4. Teamwork skills.
5. Commitment to research.
6. Record-keeping and computer skills.
7. Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
8. MSc in microbial technology or related field.
9. Extensive experience in short-chain fatty acid and metabolite analysis.
10. Strong background in fermentation models mimicking the gut environment and metabolite analysis.
