Role Description
The Head of Department: Sport Science & Performance is a full‑time, on‑site role based at the ATU campus in Letterkenny. The role involves providing academic and strategic leadership for the department, including developing and implementing departmental plans aligned with the university’s vision. The successful candidate will oversee programme design and delivery, ensure high‑quality teaching and assessment, and support curriculum innovation in sport science and performance.
Day‑to‑day responsibilities include managing staff workloads, mentoring and supporting team members, and fostering an inclusive, student‑centred learning environment. The role also includes building industry and community partnerships, supporting research and knowledge exchange activities, contributing to marketing and student recruitment initiatives, and managing departmental budgets and resources. The Head of Department will collaborate with senior leadership across the university and represent the department on relevant committees and working groups.
Qualifications
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and external partners.
Proven experience in strategic planning, departmental leadership, and academic or organisational management.
Expertise in sport science, performance, or sports management, with experience in coaching or performance development in educational or professional settings.
Understanding of marketing and student recruitment, with the ability to promote programmes and build the department’s profile.
Relevant postgraduate qualification (Master’s required; PhD or equivalent doctoral qualification in a related field is highly desirable).
Experience in curriculum development, teaching, and assessment at higher education level, with a strong commitment to student success and inclusive practice.
Demonstrated track record in research, scholarly activity, or applied practice in sport science or related disciplines.
Strong organisational, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and lead change.
Familiarity with quality assurance processes, accreditation standards, and health and safety requirements in sport and performance environments.
