Healthcare Assistant Theatre - UPMC Kildare Hospital
Location: UPMC Kildare Hospital
Job type: Permanent


Responsibilities

* On a daily basis, ensure correct equipment is in place for each procedure.
* Ensure that the correct cleaning solutions and cleaning equipment are in each sluice room.
* Ensure that all operating tables and trollies are cleaned and prepared for use.
* Ensure that trollies are dressed and ready in reception for the arrival of patients and, after each procedure, that they are removed from theatre, cleaned and dressed accordingly.
* Liaise with the anaesthetic nurse in Theatre regarding any specific requirements for the Theatre Lists.
* Transport patients into the anaesthetic rooms and from Day Surgery and the In-patient Wards.
* Keep the Nurse Manager informed of any special considerations to patients’ needs as advised on collection from theatre.
* Position the patient relevant to the procedure being carried out.
* Assist the surgeon and scrub nurses in preparing the patient for surgery (e.g., holding the limb for painting, shaving the operation site, etc.).
* Transfer the patient post-procedure to their bed and transport patients to recovery.
* Communicate patient queries to the relevant clinical manager.
* Ensure theatres are cleaned, tables washed down, trollies cleaned, positioning equipment cleaned, laundry and clinical waste placed in the correct area, and floors washed.
* Prepare the theatre for the next case.
* Assist clinical staff in delivering the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Collaborate with the scheduler daily to obtain the next day’s list and arrange transportation.
* Report unresolved queries or complaints to the Clinical Manager.
* Act as a role model and promote behaviours aligned with UPMC Kildare Hospital’s mission and values.
* Participate in appraisal and personal development planning annually.
* Respond to patient queries and ensure the patient is at ease at all times.
* Transport stock to and from stores as requested.
* Deliver specimens to the Lab/designated area and collect blood as needed.
* Receive, count and stack scrubs and sterile packs.
* Ensure adequate supplies of cleaning products, specimen pots, and linen in stores and the sluice room weekly.
* Collect pharmacy supplies as required.

* Remain professionally updated and ensure care is delivered in line with the latest evidence-based practice; participate in research where appropriate for patient benefit.
* Provide a supportive learning environment enabling educational and professional development needs of staff to be met.
* Understand and comply with statutory rules, guidelines and legislation.
* Safeguard standards of care and promote high-quality care as a primary importance.
* Act as a positive role model with regard to the hospital ethos.


Quality & Audit

* Participate in clinical audit and research activities promoting evidence-based practice.
* Undertake research/clinical audits as necessary, analyse findings and provide written reports.
* Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
* Work with the Quality and Patient Safety team to ensure accreditation standards are met.


Health and Safety

* Uphold hospital policy in relation to Fire, Infection Control and Health and Safety at Work regulations and attend updates.
* Identify potential risks for staff, patients and visitors and follow incident reporting procedures.
* Observe a general duty of care for health, safety and well-being of self, colleagues, visitors and patients, with risk management as required.

Qualifications & Experience

* Relevant FETAC Level 5 Qualification.
* At least 1 year of experience in a similar role.
* Strong organisation and problem-solving skills.
* Strong communication skills.
