Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine, Galway University Hospitals for 39.0 hours/week
This is a fixed-term appointment to the HSE West on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Galway University Hospitals for 37 hours/week. The post is for a minimum of 8 months with a view to extend up to 18 months. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Overview
Galway University Hospitals (GUH), comprising University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park University Hospital, invites applications for a Locum Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. Key Responsibilities
Provide consultant-level care in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine
Participate in inpatient ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and respiratory diagnostics
Contribute to the acute unselected medical take as part of the on‑call rota
Support and supervise NCHDs, respiratory nurse specialists, and allied health staff
Engage in quality improvement, clinical governance, and audit activities
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and cancer/ILD/airways/CF pathways as appropriate
Requirements
Specialist registration (or eligibility) with the Irish Medical Council in Respiratory Medicine & GIM
Demonstrated experience in managing complex respiratory conditions
Strong clinical leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
Commitment to high‑quality patient care in a busy university hospital setting

Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026: €235,862 €248,612 €262,070 €269,154 €276,236 €283,318
The standard working week applying to the post is 37 hours per week.
Start date 01/06/2026; minimum duration 8 months, duration negotiable.
The annual leave associated with the post is 30 Working Days per annum.
