Location of Post: 37 hour per week commitment to the Rotunda Hospital.

Details of Service: In the Rotunda Hospital, the Department of Anaesthesiology provides a full anaesthesiology service with participation in an on‑call rota. This service includes pre‑operative assessment, intra/post‑operative care, peri‑partum obstetric care including epidural analgesia and critical care (HDU) including inter‑hospital patient transfer. Additional roles include administrative, academic, audit, quality improvement and educational activities.
Patient Care: The successful applicant will be involved in the provision of anaesthesia to patients as agreed with the Master/Clinical Director. The principal subspecialty will be Obstetric Anaesthesia, but will encompass all aspects of inpatient and outpatient anaesthesia services.
Co‑operation: The Rotunda Hospital maintains a strong clinical partnership with the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) and there are opportunities for shared sessional responsibilities between these two healthcare services as per POCC 2023.
Reporting Relationship: The Consultant’s reporting relationship and accountability for the discharge of his/her contract is to the Master / Chief Executive Officer of the hospital through his/her Clinical Director.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Standard Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer. This will focus on anaesthesia for both obstetrics and gynaecology patients and encompasses pre‑assessment services. Termination of pregnancy services are integrated into ambulatory gynaecology services.
Deliver pre‑assessment and peri‑operative care of high‑risk patients.
Ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
Work within the framework of the hospital service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer.
Co‑operate with the implementation of Managerial Procedures.
Formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director/Employer periodically.
Participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and in such management or representative structures as are in place or being developed.
Provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultant’s area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request.
Ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times, having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive.
Supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non‑Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant’s care.
Participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non‑Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate.
Participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures.
Facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform planning and management of service delivery.
Additional duties appropriate to the office include:
Provision of anaesthesia for patients attending for surgery or other interventions.
Provide peri‑operative care for surgical patients, including preoperative assessment, intra‑operative care and post‑operative management and follow‑up.
Be involved in the pre‑operative assessment clinics. Provide anaesthesia and analgesia outside of theatre as requested.
Be involved in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced fellowship levels.
Participate in administrative and management functions as required to support the provision and development of anaesthetic services.
Potential for cross‑site sessional responsibilities will facilitate:
Participation in MDT to promote patient care across both institutions: direct consultation with Consultant Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, Surgeons and other MDT partners.
Facilitate transfer of high‑risk patients for diagnostics and clinical care provision including critical care (e.g. inter‑hospital transfer to higher order critical care services).
Provide all elements of comprehensive anaesthesiology service provision required in MMUH, specifically relating to operative care of obstetric trauma, cancer and placenta accreta spectrum patients.
Support other duties or roles as may arise which are part of the functions of the department.
Eligibility Criteria
Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered.
Possession of the FCA or an equivalent thereto.
Inclusion on or eligibility to be included on the Register of Specialists maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland.
Demonstrate up‑to‑date knowledge of routine aspects of anaesthesia practice, with particular emphasis on obstetrical anaesthesia.
Entry to competition / recruitment process: Only candidates registered as a Specialist in the relevant Specialty within 180 days of the interview are considered. If not, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate.
Must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health that indicates a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Must be of good character.
Age restrictions: not classified as a new entrant, must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs.
Available to attend emergencies within 30 minutes when on duty, either at the Rotunda or its partner hospitals as required.
Skills, Competencies and/or Knowledge
Advanced (fellowship or equivalent) training in obstetric anaesthesia at the time of taking up the appointment.
Expected to provide clinical leadership in development of women’s health services including termination of pregnancy and have responsibility for education, training, organisation, provision, and audit of services.
Skilled in the provision of anaesthesia to high‑risk patients. Point‑of‑care ultrasound and/or transthoracic echocardiography training desirable.
Possess skills complimentary to the existing consultant group and beneficial to future development of services including pre‑anaesthesia assessment services and perioperative care pathways (ERAS).
Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills and awareness of resource management and value for money.
Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect.
Demonstrate evidence of ability to manage a busy theatre effectively.
Demonstrate an ability to engage in research and clinical trials.
Demonstrate an ability to participate fully in audit and clinical governance programme.
