Lead Mechanical Engineer – Turlough Hill Hydro Plant Overhaul

Overview
Spencer Ogden is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer to support a major 5‑yearly overhaul at the Turlough Hill Hydro Plant. This extensive programme includes machine inspections, dewatering of the upper reservoir and penstock, and multiple significant upgrade and maintenance packages scheduled for 2027.
Key Works
* Unit 1 generator rotor pull and runner removal for repair
* Unit 2 generator rotor pull for electrical testing
* Transformer refurbishment (new HV bushings and oil coolers)
* C&I system upgrades (unit controllers, common PLC, and multiple plant PLCs)
* Extensive mechanical and electrical balance‑of‑plant activities
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure all works comply with statutory safety, health and environmental regulations and internal technical standards.
* Manage the Main EPC Mechanical Contract and other mechanical work packages as assigned.
* Liaise with specialist engineering teams to deliver overhaul works in line with defined protocols and procedures.
* Support the creation and implementation of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for all mechanical systems.
* Manage quality processes in line with the Project Quality Plan.
* Provide day‑to‑day supervision of contractors and serve as their primary point of contact.
* Review key ITP documentation and ensure compliance.
* Work closely with station management and maintenance teams throughout the project.
* Carry out regular safety, environmental and quality audits during overhaul activities.
* Report progress against the schedule and attend project meetings.
* Assist the Project Manager in contract cost control.
* Coordinate special tooling requirements with the principal contractor.
* Develop technical specifications for mechanical plant and equipment scopes.
* Support tendering and procurement processes.
* Ensure plant modification processes are followed and all mechanical documentation is updated.
* Manage assigned contracts through structured contractor management processes (e.g., kick‑off, progress, and close‑out meetings).
* Attend FATs and workshop visits as required.
* Produce a comprehensive Mechanical Close‑Out Report.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
* Experience planning major power station overhauls, including logistics, procurement, specification development and contractor management.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work effectively within a team environment and share knowledge.
* Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements.
* Strong report‑writing skills.
* Experience in hydro power plant overhauls.
Qualifications
* Experience with mechanical plant such as pumps, motors, valves, etc., within a power generation environment.
* Strong knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental standards and procedures.
* Minimum 5+ years post‑qualification experience in the power generation industry.
* Level 8 Engineering qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Base Location & Travel
* The role is based full‑time at Turlough Hill Power Station, Co. Wicklow.
* Travel, accommodation and related expenses for attending the site are not reimbursed, unless related to approved business travel outside the normal place of work.
* All travel and accommodation expenses must be pre‑agreed with the line manager and claimed through the contractor’s agency.
Safety Requirements
Contractors must comply with all site Health & Safety Regulations and follow instructions from site management.
