Role overview
As an Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer working within WSP's Energy business, you will be responsible for working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver the power transmission infrastructure that will deliver Net Zero to the UK Energy System. WSP has a significant workload with over 300 km of OHL to design.
Responsibilities
* Design overhead power line systems, including the selection of structures, conductors, and insulators.
* Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation using software tools such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD and MicroStation.
* Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
* Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure the structural integrity and electrical performance of overhead lines.
* Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
* Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and other stakeholders to integrate design requirements into project plans.
* Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during construction.
* Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
* Stay updated with the latest advancements in overhead line design and technology.
What we are looking for
* Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, preferably electrical, civil or mechanical engineering.
* Experience using PLS CADD/TOWER software.
* Prior experience in overhead line engineering up to 400 kV.
* Prior experience on upgrading projects such as utilisation of High Temperature Low Sag conductors.
* Knowledge of conducting galloping studies, EMF and Field Effects Calculation, Wake effect, AC Interference for Gas pipelines would be a plus.
* The ability to travel to projects occasionally.
* Preferable – Attained / working towards chartered engineer status
* Preferable – National Grid BP141 OHL Authorisation
