Purpose of the role: The role of the Basic Grade Medical Scientist is to provide a quality service in laboratory medicine and molecular pathology to patients in line with best standards of practice.

* The laboratory can offer candidates from other laboratory disciplines, an opportunity to work in the fascinating area of histopathology and celebrates inclusion in all medical science disciplines while delivering exceptional patient care.
* The laboratory has developed many specialised areas of histopathology testing including a FISH laboratory for lymphoma, sarcoma, and salivary gland neoplasm diagnostics, one of only three Mohs dermatology laboratories nationally, an immunohistochemistry laboratory with a large repertoire of specialised tests across multiple platforms and one of the largest diagnostics non-gynae cytopathology services in Dublin. Scientists are also trained in the area of specimen dissection in an array of tissue types from skins and small surgical specimens to large cancer resections.
* The Histopathology Department is progressive, having procured equipment such as the novel Sakura Autoembedder, Vantage Tracking System, Dual Retort Tissue Processors and the Axlab AS-410M Autosectioner.
* Education, research and development programmes are in place to support CORU registration requirements as well as to encourage new scientific capabilities. Attendance at journal clubs, seminars, and workshops is encouraged. Further education, such as Masters degrees with access to research in next generation diagnostic testing and specimen dissection courses are also supported.
