NES Fircroft is currently recruiting for a Protection Engineer for our client, a major DNO based in Ireland.
Protection Engineer
Duration: 12 months
Location: Various sites across Ireland
The role of Protection Engineer is to ensure that the protection on the network operates according to the required distribution standards. This includes setting parameters in line with standards and protection policies, conducting technical power system studies (including the connection of various generation types), and reviewing customer applications for technical correctness. Knowledge of low carbon technologies and their impact on power systems is desirable. The role also involves witnessing testing of company/customer interface sites.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess site safety before witnessing activities and coordinate work schedules with contract commissioners.
* Review site-specific risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
* Witness functional verification of protection scheme designs and confirm compliance with standards.
* Understand protection schemes, especially voltage, current, Static and Dynamic Frequency protection, and earth fault functions.
* Coordinate HV setting requests and embedded generation protection settings.
* Review customer generation connection applications and settings.
* Witness testing of customer generation sites and sign off.
* Resolve customer queries related to generation interface protection.
* Assist in investigations of faults or malfunctions of protection equipment.
* Apply protection settings to 38kV and MV feeders and transformers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
* Strong technical capability.
* Excellent communication and report writing skills.
* Self-motivated with project management skills.
* Ability to make informed decisions and solve problems logically and imaginatively.
* At least three years’ experience in Power System Studies, settings calculations, and commissioning.
Desirable
* Site work experience in MV or HV substations, including commissioning.
* Knowledge of health and safety legislation.
* Familiarity with secondary test injection equipment like CMC356.
* Experience with power system studies software such as PSS/E, PSS SINCAL, PowerFactory, ETAP, etc.
Qualifications
* Electrical Craft Certificate, Third Level Electrical Qualification, or equivalent work experience.
* Full clean Irish driving licence.
