Key Responsibilities
Engineering for Scale: Design and implement high-performance backend services that can withstand massive throughput, focusing on latency, memory models, and I/O efficiency to ensure linear scalability.
Distributed State Management: Own the challenge of data integrity, solving problems around distributed consistency, leader election, and state persistence by selecting appropriate storage patterns.
Resilience & Observability: Build systems that fail gracefully, implementing advanced patterns for circuit breaking, backpressure, and resource isolation to prevent system overload and cascading failures.
Cloud-Native Architecture: Apply immutable infrastructure and container orchestration principles, ensuring stateful applications run reliably in dynamic environments such as Kubernetes, handling networking and persistent storage complexities.
Technical Rigor: Solve unusually complex problems where standard documentation does not exist, analyzing JVM internals, garbage collection pauses, and thread contention to optimise critical data pipelines.
Qualifications
7+ years of backend engineering experience with a focus on data-intensive applications or distributed systems.
Expert-level mastery of Java, with deep knowledge of JVM internals including concurrency and memory management.
Experience contributing to or modifying open-source data engines such as Hadoop, Spark, or similar.
Strong grasp of distributed systems theory (CAP theorem, consensus algorithms, eventual consistency) and trade-offs between availability and consistency.
Proficiency in modern orchestration principles (e.g., Kubernetes) and designing applications that survive pod evictions and network partitions.
Comfort reading and debugging code in other languages when required (polyglot curiosity).
Ability to work autonomously within general parameters to determine necessary action to obtain desired results.
BSc/MSc in related field or equivalent experience.
Optional: Deep understanding of database internals (indexes, planners, storage engines) and experience refactoring monolithic legacy systems into microservices or serverless architectures.
