CSSD Team Leader

(Permanent & Full-Time)

The Dublin Dental University Hospital is seeking to recruit a CSSD Team Leader to join our Central Decontamination Unit. This is a full-time and permanent contract. The successful candidate will assist in a range of Central Decontamination Unit functions, including staff rosters, liaising with CMN's regarding clinical activity, collection & transportation of RIMD between clinical areas and CSSD.

The position reports to and is accountable to the CSSD Manager or the director of Nursing in all matters relating to the job.


Outline of Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will assist in a range of Central Decontamination Unit functions including but not limited to:

* Complying of weekly staff rotas and ensure skill mix and equitability as per the requirements of the department.

* Take responsibility and control of staff flexi time and report back to the CSSD Manager.

* Liaise with clinical areas and in particular Floor Managers with regards to clinical requirements and control of instruments in the clinical areas.

* Be able to motivate a team.

* Take control of team meeting in the absence of the CSSD Manager.

* Liaise with CSSD Manager regarding budget/stores deliveries identify and report ant discrepancies.

* Collect and transport used medical devices and equipment from user areas for decontamination and sterilisation and return to the correct department.

* Decontaminate used medical devices using mechanical methods.

* Inspect and function test medical devices. Report any discrepancies immediately to CSSD Manager or Team Leader.

* Assembly and packing of instrument sets and other equipment for sterilisation.

* Loading and unloading autoclaves, sterilising packs and sets of instruments.

* Prepare and examine packs prior to their storage, for tears and dampness.

* Distribute and store all sterilised equipment and instruments in appropriate place.

* Observation and checking of graphs and gauges and any malfunction of autoclaves, and washer disinfectors.

* Daily/Weekly testing of autoclaves and washers disinfectors.

* Record relevant data in appropriate logbooks with full clear signature of operative/technician.

* Maintenance of records in line with policy of Department and EU legislation.

* Archive documents according to national and European legislation.

* Stocking shelves with sterile supplies, non-sterile disposable items, assisting with stock control and requisitioning.

* Storage and handling of raw material components.

* Ensure that standard precautions are adhered to and are in compliance with infection control and other policies.

* Comply with Health and Safety procedures by using protective clothing – PPE (personal protective equipment).

* Ensure Health & Safety standards are met.

* Report any incident/accident that may occur to the CSSD Manager/Team Leader in accordance with hospital policy.

* Participate in manual and/or computerised traceability of reusable medical devices as part of a quality system.

* Adhere to National Hygiene Standards and complete Hygiene Audits monthly.

* Observe and uphold daily / weekly cleaning standards in the department. Report any inadequacies.

* Maintain a clean and dust-free environment at all times.

* Facilitate effective communication with the multidisciplinary team as necessary.

* Provide a high standard of safe practice for patient care.

* Ensure that all equipment in the CSSD is checked by an appropriate user according to hospital policy.

* Demonstrate initiative and be receptive to new ideas and development.

* Use knowledge, judgement and experience to develop ways of coping with crisis situations.

* Ensure that telephone messages are correctly delivered to the CSSD Manager / Team Leader.

* Act as a mentor for new Technicians.

* All other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the CSSD Manager / Team Leader or Director of Nursing.

The role of the CSSD Team Leader includes but is not limited to:

* Ad hoc projects, as required.

* To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by the Head of Division.

* Take responsibility for own up-skilling and training.

The post holder will attend the following meetings and all other meetings as required:

* CSSD forth-nightly team meetings

* Staff forums

* Mandatory training days

The extent and speed of change in the delivery of services is such that adaptability is essential to this level of appointment. The person chosen will be required to maintain, enhance and develop their knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to changing situations. Therefore, this Job Description is an outline of the current broad areas of responsibility and accountability and should not be regarded as a comprehensive listing. It will be reviewed and updated in line with future needs.

The post holder may be moved to any other position within clerical/administration throughout the hospital at any time during their employment on a temporary or permanent basis.


Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification

Each candidate must:

* Hold a qualification in Health Services Skills or Health Care Support at Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI)* Level 5 (or higher).

* Have a minimum 3 years' experience in a clinical environment.

* Be fully competent in MS Office, in particular Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet and other relevant packages.

* Understand the role of the CSSD Team Leader in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).

* Work with the CSSD Manager and other Team Leaders to ensure the efficient running of the CSSD.

* Be cognisant of safeguarding the safety and welfare of patients, staff and students.

* Have excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.

* Have a high capacity for responsibility and individual initiative.

* Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.

* Demonstrate a patient focused approach.

* Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital.

* Understand the total healthcare delivery system.

* Must be available to available to work as per the CSSD roster.

Candidates must ideally:

* Have experience in Decontamination and/or C.S.S.D and/or possess a qualification is desirable.

* Have proven organisational skills.

* Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.

* Have the ability to undertake the physical demands of the role.

* Be motivated and able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.

* Possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of Dublin Dental University Hospital.

* Be of good character.
