Theatre Staff Nurse - UPMC Kildare
Location: Kildare
Job type: Fixed Term
Overview of role
To work as a member of a team of nurses in the UPMC Kildare Hospital theatre department, providing high-quality, patient-centred care for patients and their families.
The role involves developing and maintaining good relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team, working closely with nursing colleagues, and contributing to innovative practice within the unit.
The theatre nurse will assist in a wide range of specialities such as orthopaedic, general, ophthalmology, gynaecology, ENT, pain management, urology, and vascular, while developing specialist knowledge of nursing practice related to the assigned clinical area.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
Act as preceptor for preregistration students, mentor new clinical and non-clinical staff, and support colleagues as required.
Collaborate with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments to promote UPMC Kildare Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
Maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships within the multidisciplinary team to foster team spirit and collaborative practice.
Support the theatre manager by meeting responsibilities as outlined by the Theatre Manager or Director of Nursing.
Identify and discuss nursing and patient needs with consultants, the nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients, and carers.
Maintain the highest standards of patient care and safety at all times.
Apply principles and processes of pre-assessment.
Communicate effectively, both written and verbal, and possess working knowledge of NMBI publications, including the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
Maintain professional registration and submit to HR for yearly verification.
Maintain knowledge of policies and guidelines at both unit and hospital level, including:
Clinical risk reporting policy
Occupational Health
Facilities Management
Patient Moving and Handling
Resuscitation / Basic Life Support
Health and Safety
Departmental Financial & Budgetary Controls
Patient Complaints procedure
Falls Management programme
Implement proactive approaches to accreditation standards and possess in-depth knowledge of departmental and hospital-wide policies.
Develop IT skills to work efficiently within the clinical environment, including Isoft, Lab Information System, and other relevant systems.
Continuously assess risks within the unit to ensure safety of patients, relatives and staff; report any incidents according to hospital guidelines.
Coordinate with the Scheduling Team regarding patient bed and theatre slot allocation.
General
Mentor new clinical and non-clinical staff and provide guidance as needed.
Assist in developing the hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
Maintain effective teamwork and collaboration.
Support the unit manager in agreed responsibilities.
Maintain high standards of communication and professional registration.
Report hospital risk and Health and Safety concerns responsibly.
Apply proactive measures to maintain accreditation standards.
Develop IT competencies, including Isoft, Lab Information System, and other relevant systems.
Continuously assess risks related to patient and staff safety; report incidents per hospital policies.
Coordinate with the Scheduling Team on bed and slot allocation.
Professional Accountability and Development
Remain professionally updated and deliver care aligned with the latest research; participate in research where appropriate.
Provide a supportive learning environment to meet staff development needs.
Ensure compliance with statutory rules, guidelines, and legislation.
Safeguard standards of care and promote patient-centred practice.
Serve as a positive role model for the hospital ethos.
Quality & Audit
Engage in clinical audit and research to support evidence-based practice.
Conduct and analyse research/audit, providing written reports.
Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
Collaborate with the Quality and Patient Safety team to maintain accreditation standards.
Health and Safety
Adhere to UPMC Kildare Hospital policies on Fire, Infection Control and Health and Safety regulations.
Identify potential risks for staff, patients, and visitors; follow incident reporting procedures.
Practice general duty of care for all individuals within the hospital.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
At least 2 years of post-registration theatre experience – essential.
Paediatric theatre experience – essential.
Evidence of ongoing CPD.
Relevant theatre qualification – desirable.
Salary:
€37,****** – €53,****** per annum, based on a 37-hour work week.
