Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital.
Job type: Permanent.
Overview of role
UPMC Whitfield Hospital are currently recruiting for Clinical Nurse Manager I – Orthopaedic Ward on a full-time permanent contract.
The primary role of the CNM I is to provide safe and effective care to patients; the CN trusting will coordinate, plan, and manage clinical activity and resources within the ward, and will work with the CNM II to lead and implement quality care initiatives.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Professional / Clinical Responsibilities
Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence-based care-planning approach.
Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
Co-ordinate, assess, plan, deliver and review patient care by all staff in the designated area.
Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines of the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.
Participate in team meetings and committees, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members as required.
Collaborate with patients, family, carers and other staff in treatment and care.
Manage and access all documents, policies and procedures and report incidents and complaints through the hospital quality management system – Q-Pulse.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
Ensure that the care delivered by the team is based on evidence-based practice and is aligned with hospital policy.
Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers and create a ward environment that is welcoming and homely.
Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team, promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department in conjunction with the line manager.
Ensure that all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment, and that such equipment is maintained in good working condition.
Maintain strict confidentiality of patient and iing information in accordance with policy.
Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the post.
Encourage evidence deberían practice, using a care-planning approach.
Communicate verbally and/or in writing the results of assessments, treatment programmes and recommendations to the team and relevant others in line with hospital policy.
Play an active role in discharge planning of patients.
Assist in providing staff leadership and motivation to foster good staff relations and performance.
Managerial Responsibilities
Provide supervision, co-ordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure optimum delivery of care in the designated area.
Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure, supporting the CNM II and deputising in his/her absence when required.
Manage communication at ward and departmental levels and facilitate team-building.
Provide staff leadership and motivation to foster good working relationships and performance.
Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
Lead and implement change.
Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures.
Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies at the area and hospital level.
Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Ensure that the staff development and induction programme for trained and untrained staff is in place for the clinical area.
Personnel
Follow uniform policy references.
General
There may be a requirement to work in other areas of the hospital in line with patient requirements as directed by the line manager or deputy.
Staff must provide satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed.
Respect the organisational values of the hospital.
Quality & Safety – Safe Culture
Actively participate in all quality and safety initiatives and daily work pursuits of excellence.
Work with the line manager to plan, monitor, analyse and improve all quality programmes.
Participate in the development of performance indicators in line with department and business objectives.
Initiate, participate in and evaluate audits according to JCI, hospital policy and Lean requirements under guidance of an audit lead.
Health & Safety
Protect personal safety, health and welfare, and that of others, during all work activities.
Co-operate with UPMC to ensure safety, health and welfare at work and report potential hazards.
Attend annual education sessions on fire health and safety.
Information Governance
Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff records; never leave information accessible to unauthorised persons or discuss it outside normal duty.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered in the General Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
Completed a management course or commit to undertaking one.
Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience within a medical/surgical environment.
Previous management experience desirable.
Experience of change management.
