Radiology Assistant, Twilight Shift - UPMC Whitfield Hospital. Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital. Job type: Permanent.
UPMC are hiring a Radiology Assistant, Twilight to join the Radiology team at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford. This role will be primarily focused on the twilight shift which runs from 6pm to 12am Monday to Friday. The Diagnostic Imaging Department provides a service to both Inpatients and Outpatients, including General Radiography, Theatre Imaging, Ultrasound, DEXA, MRI, PET CT, CT and CathLab services. The holder will work as part of the Multidisciplinary team in the Radiology Department and assist in providing a high-quality service to patients in assigned areas. The role includes clinical and administrative duties that support Radiographers in providing a high-quality service to users. The successful candidate will be rostered in the Radiology department and will assist the Radiographers and Radiologists in the areas of MRI, Ultrasound, CT, Image management, and General Radiography.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* General & MRI Duties:
* Welcome patients and their guardians to the imaging service in a professional manner; escort patients and relevant paperwork to the MRI Suite.
* Escort patient and relevant paperwork to MRI Suite.
* Check labels have been printed for IV gadolinium & Buscopan patients.
* Respect patient confidentiality and privacy for all information discussed during examinations.
* Assist Radiographers during all Diagnostic Imaging examinations, including changing, moving and lifting of patients and equipment.
* Assist patients in completing consent forms for procedures.
* Check patient screening form: confirm Name / DOB / Address (tick for completion) and discuss any history of metal in eyes; confirm patient has signed the forms.
* Assist with changing into gowns, removing jewellery and securing belongings.
* Explain brief MRI procedure and the use of the call bell and headphones; provide ear plugs to patient.
* Ensure scan/examination rooms are tidy and stock is replenished prior to sessions.
* Assist Radiographer in coil and patient setup for scan.
* Process scan paperwork; complete insurance details on forms; monitor emails/Teams for outstanding insurance queries and share correspondence as needed.
* Assist patients off the scanner and after exam; room clean down and prep for next patient.
* Monitor stock levels of consumables and highlight re-order needs; restock cannulation trolley, gloves, syringes, needles and dressings; replenish gowns, couch rolls and incontinence sheets.
* Empty linen bins in Radiology Department at end of shift.
* Liaise with wards to ensure timely transfer of patients to/from department; direct patients to changing cubicles for X-ray examinations and assist with changing if required.
* Reassure patients when examinations are delayed and provide a reasonable completion estimate.
* Assist in transferring patients from trolleys/wheelchairs to examination tables; training in hoists if required.
* Supervise and assist patients as needed (e.g., toileting).
* Rotation areas may include MRI, CT, Ultrasound, General X-ray, Theatres, and PACS; areas may develop in the future.
* Assist with any other Radiology Department work as required by the Radiography Service Manager/CSR or designate.
RIS / PACS Office Support
* Assist with queries regarding image/CD requests and image transfer via BEAM; stay up to date with relevant documentation/procedures.
* Maintain accurate filing systems and records (computerised and/or paper).
* Undertake administrative support and assignments as directed; ensure data quality and integrity.
* Assist the RIS/PACS/BEAM Administrator in monitoring CD requests; adhere to GDPR and confidentiality guidelines when handling patient data.
Ultrasound Department
* Escort patients to and from ultrasound examination rooms; assist Sonographer/Radiologist with workload and sterile procedures.
* Monitor in-patient ultrasound list on RIS; liaise with wards regarding patient transport and preparation (e.g., ensuring full bladders prior to pelvic scans) in consultation with the Sonographer.
* Ensure timely in-patient transfers from wards/departments as directed; arrange appropriate patient transport; assist with gowning and patient needs; assist with lifting, moving and positioning as required.
* Chaperone for intimate ultrasound examinations when requested; follow infection control procedures for infectious patients; sterilise ultrasound probes post-procedure and after isolation cases.
* Carry out general housekeeping in the Ultrasound Department; monitor and replenish stocks daily; maintain professional standards regarding consent, confidentiality, ethics and legislation.
Routine Maintenance of Equipment
* Assist the Radiation Protection Officer or Radiographer with Quality Assurance duties.
* Assist radiographers with equipment breakdowns and report faults to the Radiography Service Manager or deputy.
Administrative
* Carry out administrative and clerical duties to support Radiographer staff and the Radiography department (e.g., scan paperwork, insurance documentation, system close out).
* Register requests onto RIS as required; answer the telephone and relay accurate messages; maintain stock and supply records and liaise with radiography staff re stocks and supplies.
* Contribute to planning and development of the Radiography Service and participate in service improvements with Radiographers.
Education and Training
* Take advice and training when required; allocate time for Departmental Audits; participate in team-based development, training and learning; participate in induction of new staff as directed.
* Develop and maintain knowledge of key policies and guidelines (clinical risk reporting, Occupational Health, Facilities Management, Patient Moving and Handling, Resuscitation/BLS, Health and Safety, Departmental Financial & Budgetary Controls, Patient Complaints, Falls Management).
Information Resources
* Be an efficient user of RIS and PACS systems and other required systems.
Health and Safety
* Carry out work safely under the Health and Safety at Work Act and related legislation; identify, assess and report risks; observe safety rules; report incidents and near misses; wear appropriate PPE; operate only within training; be familiar with HIQA standards and UPMC protocols; participate in sustainability initiatives where applicable.

Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements:
* A Fetac/QQI Level 5 in Health/Social Care is essential
* Previous experience in a Radiography Department is desirable
* Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills; strong communication and clinical skills; fluency in English; computer literacy; flexibility and initiative; ability to work independently and as part of a team; keen interest in a caring profession.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* Work in the Radiology Department on a day-to-day basis; knowledge of radiographic equipment and procedures; ability to follow instructions and protocols; attention to detail and accuracy in patient positioning; communication with patients and healthcare professionals; understanding of MRI and radiation safety measures; ability to work in fast-paced environments; flexibility and adaptability; computer skills; physical stamina; teamwork.
