As a Lead Piping Designer, you will be responsible for managing the design and layout of complex piping systems for large-scale projects in the pharmaceutical, biopharma, and life sciences sectors, with a focus on sterile filling and OSD processes. You will lead the 3D design and coordination of piping systems, ensuring accuracy and alignment across disciplines. This role requires both technical expertise and leadership skills to guide design teams and collaborate with external stakeholders. You will report to the Department Manager and work closely with the Lead Engineers, ensuring project deliverables are met on time and within budget.

2. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Lead Piping Design: Oversee the design and 3D modelling of complex piping systems, ensuring that all piping layouts and designs adhere to project requirements, industry standards, and regulatory guidelines.
* Project Leadership: Act as the Lead Designer on medium to large projects, taking responsibility for design deliverables, resource allocation, and coordination with other engineering disciplines.
* BIM & Clash Resolution: Attend project BIM meetings and lead the resolution of design clashes, ensuring that all systems are coordinated effectively with other disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and structural teams.
* Vendor Collaboration: Review vendor drawings and specifications, ensuring that all equipment and components are integrated into the overall piping system design.
* Team Supervision: Guide and mentor a team of piping designers, providing technical leadership and support to ensure high-quality design work is produced.
* Client Interface: Collaborate with clients and external parties, ensuring alignment between client expectations and project deliverables. Attend client meetings as required to discuss design issues and project progress.
* Quality Control: Ensure all designs and models undergo proper reviews and checks before submission, including the generation and verification of isometric drawings from process P&IDs.
* Material Take-offs: Lead the preparation of material take-offs and support procurement teams in selecting appropriate materials for piping systems.
* Pipe Supports: Oversee the incorporation of pipe support standards and specifications into piping designs, ensuring structural integrity and safety compliance.
* Documentation and Reporting: Maintain up-to-date records of design progress, project changes, and technical challenges, providing regular updates to the Department Manager and Project Manager.

3. REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

* Industry Expertise: Minimum 10 years of experience in piping design, with a focus on pharmaceutical, bio-pharma, and life sciences sectors, particularly in sterile filling and clean utility systems.
* 3D Design Proficiency: Strong experience with 3D design tools such as CADWorx, Plant3D, or similar software, as well as Navisworks for clash detection and project coordination.
* Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of P&IDs, piping specifications, and relevant industry codes and standards. Experience in producing accurate piping layouts and models based on these inputs.
* Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead design teams on complex projects, ensuring effective team collaboration, resource allocation, and project delivery.
* Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving skills, particularly in resolving design and coordination challenges across multiple disciplines.
* Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interface with clients, project teams, and management.

4. EDUCATION:

* Preferred: Certificate (Level 6) or Diploma/Ordinary Degree (Level 7) in Mechanical Engineering, or a similar technical qualification.

5. KEY COMPETENCIES:

* Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget.
* Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail in both design and documentation, ensuring high standards of quality control.
* Interpersonal Skills: Strong ability to collaborate across teams and disciplines, fostering positive working relationships with colleagues and external partners.
