We are hiring Senior Grade Medical Scientist - Histology(Maternity Cover) into a Hospital in Tralee, Ireland.
Contract Type: Maternity Cover (Specified Purpose Contract – 35 hrs/week) Responsibilities Perform and oversee routine and specialised histology laboratory procedures, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and slide preparation.
Ensure accurate specimen handling, identification, and documentation in accordance with laboratory protocols and quality standards.
Supervise and support Medical Scientists, laboratory staff, and trainees in the histology department.
Maintain and monitor quality control and quality assurance procedures to ensure reliable laboratory results.
Assist in the validation, implementation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and new diagnostic techniques.
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety standards, infection control policies, and regulatory guidelines.
Collaborate with consultant histopathologists and multidisciplinary teams to support diagnostic services.
Participate in laboratory audits, accreditation processes, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Contribute to the training, mentoring, and professional development of laboratory staff and students.
Maintain accurate records and ensure effective laboratory data management and reporting systems.
Requirements Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by CORU, or meet the requirements under Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act ****, with proof of application for CORU registration if applicable.
Hold a Level 9 postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine.
Have a minimum of four years' full-time clinical experience as a Medical Scientist in Histology within a medical laboratory.
Demonstrate strong knowledge of laboratory quality standards, including Joint Commission International guidelines.
Experience with INAB accreditation and ISO ***** laboratory standards is desirable.
Show the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Possess strong IT and laboratory information system skills.
Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Be flexible and adaptable in supporting laboratory operations and service demands.
Be willing to participate in the on-call rota as required.
