The role supports patient care through the timely transport of patients, equipment, meals, linen, pharmacy items, and clinical samples, while maintaining the highest standards of communication, patient dignity, safety, and infection prevention and control Role Purpose To provide a safe, efficient, and responsive portering service across the hospital, supporting patient care through the timely movement of patients, equipment, meals, linen, pharmacy items, and clinical samples.
The role requires excellent communication skills, flexibility, and a strong focus on patient dignity, safety, and infection prevention and control.
Key Responsibilities The post holder is responsible for transporting patients safely and respectfully between wards and departments and for responding promptly to bleep and phone requests while clearly communicating expected response times.
The role includes assisting during emergency situations, including responding to Cardiac Arrest bleeps under the direction of senior nursing staff.
Duties also involve transporting equipment, specimens, pharmacy orders, linen, meals, and other items as required, responding to clean linen requests, and facilitating patient transport to Physiotherapy and Cardiology departments.
Health, Safety and Infection Control The post holder must report any issues, delays, or incidents to the relevant department and the Duty ADON in a timely manner.
Infection prevention and control procedures must be strictly followed at all times, including the correct use of PPE.
Patient confidentiality and dignity must be maintained, and safe manual handling practices must be observed.
Working Arrangements and Uniform The role requires flexibility to cover colleagues' breaks when needed, with MAU/LIU staff being informed when breaks are taken.
The correct uniform must be worn at all times, consisting of a blue shirt with black or blue trousers.
Fleeces must be removed when PPE is required.
Communication and Professional Standards Effective communication and professional conduct are essential to the role.
Any delay or inability to attend a task must be communicated promptly to the affected department, such as the kitchen, ward, or pharmacy.
All bleeps must be answered via mobile phone or the nearest landline, with confirmation of the estimated response time.
A courteous and professional manner must be maintained at all times when dealing with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
Essential Skills and Attributes The role requires good verbal communication skills and the ability to prioritise tasks in a busy hospital environment.
The post holder must be physically capable of carrying out manual handling duties, be flexible and reliable, and remain calm and responsive during emergency situations.
A strong awareness of health and safety requirements is essential.
Desirable Experience and Training Previous experience in a hospital or healthcare portering role is desirable, along with knowledge of hospital layouts and departments.
Manual handling training is also desirable.
