We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chemical Engineer within the Chief Mechanical Engineers (CME) Department.
The Chemical Engineer will provide essential technical support, conduct failure investigations on chemicals used, manage third-party laboratory analyses, and contribute to safety and compliance within the CME Department.

Job purpose:
· To provide technical support and advice to the CME Department.
· To conduct investigations into failures of chemicals (including oils and lubricants).
· To procure and direct as required, third party laboratories, test facilities, consultants or experts required to conduct analysis work for the CME Dept.
· To provide useful interpretation of test reports, consultants reports and chemical data sheets to allow the CME Dept. to make technical & business decisions.
· To provide technical and analysis reports to the CME Department.
· To provide material and product specifications for the RU Procurement Department.
· To approve all chemicals, oils, lubricants, and fuels used by the CME dept.
· To conduct basis in-house testing of materials, e.g., hardness testing, microscopy analysis.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
· Degree level qualification in Chemical Science or Chemical Science and Engineering.
· A minimum of 5 years post graduate experience working in industry.
· Knowledge of failure investigation methods.
· Experience of writing technical reports.
· Knowledge of safe handling of chemicals.
· Knowledge of oil sampling and associated tests.
· Excellent technical ability in the interpretation of laboratory test results.
· Experience of chemical selection, especially for safety critical applications.
· Experience of selecting chemical treatments of materials, e.g. protections and coatings.
· Experience of selecting alternative chemicals to those previously employed.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Good PC skills with knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
· Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
· Ability to work on own initiative.
· Knowledge of the regulatory environment.
· Understanding of technical standards.
· Knowledge of international standards such as EN, ISO etc. standards relevant to areas of expertise
Responsibilities:
· Provide technical support to the dept. in the field of chemical engineering
· Direct technical investigations into failures of rolling stock equipment and components, where the performance of a chemical, lubricant, or fuel is a factor, with the aim of improving the safety, reliability, and performance of RU fleet.
· Provide interpretation of test results, reports etc. for the dept.
· Produce technical reports into failures of rolling stock equipment in which a chemical, lubricant, or fuel may have played a part.
· Evaluate technical specifications for chemicals, lubricants, or fuels to be used by the Dept.
· Undertake reviews of Safety Data Sheets of various products for use in the CME Department
· Lead the procurement of independent consultancy, test laboratories to assist in investigations or analysis.
· Manage the technical evaluation aspect of the procurement process as required and make recommendations for preferred suppliers
· Provide feedback to the Technical Manager on the suitability of analytical activities within the CME Department and recommend appropriate changes or additional techniques
· Maintain a register of approved chemicals, lubricants, and fuels for use by the Dept.
· Be the Technical point of contact between the dept. and its oil analysis contractor.
· Participate in the Engineering Change Process as a technical expert.
· Develop the internal testing capabilities
