Job Description
This role sits within Global Manufacturing, in the Vision and Automation Services (VAAS) organization.
As a Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on individual contributor who applies strong software engineering fundamentals and sound judgment to deliver high-quality solutions in a complex manufacturing environment.
You will work under general supervision on problems of moderate scope, contributing to the design and delivery of production-grade software
What You Will Do
* Design, develop, test, and maintain production-grade software for VAAS platforms such as fleet management, diagnostics, and vision/AI-enabled workloads.
* Apply established engineering techniques to deliver solutions, collaborating with a diverse group of engineers and partners.
* Contribute to a culture that values urgency, accountability, and teamwork, aligned with GM values and ways of working.
Core Responsibilities
Deliver End-to-End Software Features
* Design, implement, and unit test backend and/or frontend components based on clearly defined business and technical requirements.
* Contribute to APIs, data models, system integrations, and user interface workflows as required by the product area.
Apply Strong Engineering Practices
* Write clean, maintainable, and testable code using Java, SQL, and modern UI frameworks such as Angular or React.
* Build secure and robust services using Spring Boot and related Java frameworks.
* Adhere to GM and VAAS coding standards, secure development patterns, and code review practices.
Work in a Cloud-Ready, Containerized Environment
* Develop and debug services deployed using Docker and Kubernetes, integrating with enterprise services and messaging systems.
* Support deployments and configuration in on-premise and/or cloud environments in partnership with senior engineers and deployment teams.
Collaborate Across Teams and Functions
* Participate in agile ceremonies including stand-ups, sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives.
* Use tools such as Jira, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines to manage work and delivery.
* Collaborate with peers, senior engineers, technical leads, and partners (e.g., Deployment, SRE, MES and plant stakeholders) to clarify requirements and validate solutions.
* Communicate progress, risks, and blockers clearly and proactively.
Support Quality, Reliability, and Operations
* Implement and maintain unit tests and contribute to integration and regression testing efforts.
* Participate in incident triage, debugging, and corrective actions with guidance from senior engineers.
* Contribute to documentation such as design notes, runbooks, and how-to guides to enable reuse and operational support.
Drive Continuous Improvement
* Propose improvements to processes, tools, and technical patterns to reduce friction and improve delivery speed and quality.
* Learn and adopt new technologies and frameworks aligned with VAAS direction, including observability, messaging, and AI/ML integration.

* 5–7 years of professional software development experience, including ownership of features or components in production systems.
Technical Skills
* Strong hands-on experience with Java and SQL.
* Practical experience with at least one modern UI framework (e.g., Angular or React).
* Experience building services with Spring Boot or similar Java frameworks.
* Exposure to containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes (on-premise or cloud).
* Solid understanding of software development best practices, including testing, code reviews, version control, and secure coding.
* Experience integrating with enterprise services such as REST APIs, messaging systems, and databases.
* Experience working in an agile development environment.
Hybrid: This position is classified as hybrid, with a requirement to work from the Limerick office a minimum of three days per week.
