Clinical Nurse Manager I - Orthopaedics - UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford

Overview of role
UPMC Whitfield Hospital is recruiting for Clinical Nurse Manager I – Orthopaedic Ward on a Full‑time Permanent Contract. The primary role is to provide safe and effective care to patients and to play a pivotal role in service planning, coordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The CNMI will collaborate with the CNMII to coordinate and lead the implementation and provision of quality care.
Professional / Clinical Responsibilities

Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence‑based care‑planning approach.
Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
Lead the coordination, assessment, planning, delivery and review of patient care by all staff in the designated area.
Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care within the guidelines laid out by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.
Participate in team meetings and committees, communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
Collaborate with patients, family, carers and other staff in treatment and care.
Manage documentation, policies and procedures and report incidents and complaints through the hospital quality management system – Q‑Pulse.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and by supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
Ensure care delivered by the team reflects evidence‑based practice and agrees with hospital policy.
Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers; make the ward welcoming and homely.
Act as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team, promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department in conjunction with the line manager.
Ensure all staff are familiar with the use and care of equipment and that equipment is maintained in good working condition.
Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.
Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the post.
Encourage evidence‑based practice using a care‑planning approach.
Communicate verbally and/or in writing the results of assessments, treatments and recommendations to the team and relevant others, in accordance with hospital policy.
Play an active role in discharge planning of patients.
Assist in providing staff leadership and motivation that supports good staff relations and performance.

Managerial Responsibilities

Provide supervision, coordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure optimum delivery of care.
Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure, supporting the CNMII and deputising when required.
Manage communication at ward and departmental level and facilitate team building.
Provide staff leadership and motivation that promotes good working relations and performance.
Manage resources efficiently and effectively.
Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
Lead and implement change.
Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures.
Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Ensure staff development and induction programmes for trained and untrained staff are in place.

Qualifications & Experience

Registered in the General Division of the NMBI.
Completed a management course or be willing to undertake one.
Minimum 3 years post‑qualification experience within a Medical/Surgical environment.
Previous management experience is desirable.
Experience of change management.

Salary: €57,208.23 – €67,372.50 per annum based on a 37‑hour week
