Postdoctoral Researcher – Microneedle & Transdermal Technologies
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

Background
Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe’s leading centres in deep tech ICT research and development. It hosts over 600 researchers, engineers and support staff and has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall National Institute is performing breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro-nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in life sciences including medtech, biopharma and agritech.

Tyndall is currently engaged in an ambitious ‘ICT for Health’ strategy that will leverage our core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of intelligent medical devices and systems. A significant part of this activity is focussed on the development of wearable and transdermal technologies for applications in drug delivery and diagnostics.

Tyndall National Institute is now seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in this exciting and rapidly expanding R&D field, primarily to work on rapid prototyping of the microneedle-based devices that will underpin the next generation of wearable and transdermal biosensors.

Purpose of the Role
Tyndall National Institute now invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in the Life Sciences Interface Group. This is an exciting opportunity for you to help implement applied research in a fast-moving area. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary, industry-aligned team of researchers with a focus on developing the microneedle technologies that will subsequently be merged with smart actuators, low power wearable devices, biosensors, and embedded systems.

This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role, in which you will design, prototype and test a range of microneedle devices. Your activities will also include aspects of project management and researcher supervision. The position is likely to involve some international travel to meetings, conferences and workshops. In return, you will have the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for medical technology challenges, as well as to gain valuable experience in the development of next-generation devices and systems.

Key Responsibilities
The candidate will be required to:

* Review the state-of-the-art in microneedle technologies on an ongoing basis;
* Assess and use microfabrication techniques such as 3D printing, moulding, masking, cutting and coating to develop and fabricate a range of prototype devices;
* Perform biomechanical and reliability testing, using ex-vivo skin samples and skin substitutes to validate performance under laboratory conditions
* Work closely with other team members who will be developing complementary aspects of the platform;
* Construct demonstrator devices for internal and external showcase;
* Report results to team, commercial partners and funding agencies;
* Enhance Tyndall’s position internationally as a world renowned in the development of transdermal interface platforms
* Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required
* Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system
* Ensure all activities are compliant with required Health and Safety standards
* To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post
Essential Criteria
The successful candidate must have:
* a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. biomedical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, mechanical engineering);
* demonstrable experience in one or more areas such as additive manufacturing, microsensor technology, microneedle devices, MEMS, device test and characterisation;
* strong communication skills are required, as evidenced by prior experience such as working with/in industry, scientific paper writing, conference presentation and report writing;
* practical, laboratory-based prototyping experience in sensor and/or actuator devices
Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of entrepreneurial experience
* Evidence of creative skills/creativity
* Previous work in one or more areas such as microfabrication, CAD software, medical device design and development, embedded systems, biosensors, microneedles or microfluidics, electrochemical sensing, and/or bioMEMS
* Excellent organizational and communications skills, an understanding of the research environment, the ability to communicate his/her research and the potential to manage a research project
Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.
The duration of the project is 12 months in the first instance, although this may be extended pending funding and the impact of the candidate.

Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Post-Doctoral Researchers €45,847 - €52,339 pa. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
