Staff Grade Speech and Language Therapist
Reports To: Senior Speech and Language Therapist / Speech and Language Therapy Manager
Purpose of the Post
The Staff Grade Speech and Language Therapist will provide assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and management of communication and swallowing disorders across the designated client group. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence-based, person-centered care in accordance with HSE policies, professional standards, and best practice guidelines.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the assessment and management of dysphagia and hold relevant dysphagia competencies.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Assess, diagnose, and manage clients presenting with communication, language, speech, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders.
Develop and implement individualised treatment plans based on client needs and clinical evidence.
Provide dysphagia assessment and management in line with recognised professional standards and local governance procedures.
Complete clinical swallowing evaluations and contribute to mealtime management plans where appropriate.
Provide recommendations regarding diet and fluid modifications in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members.
Monitor client progress and review intervention plans as required.
Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records in accordance with HSE and professional requirements.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and discharge planning processes.
Service Development and Quality
Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of Speech and Language Therapy services.
Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and service evaluations.
Support the implementation of national policies, clinical guidelines, and best practice standards.
Maintain awareness of developments within Speech and Language Therapy and dysphagia management.
Communication and Collaboration
Work collaboratively with clients, families, carers, healthcare professionals, and external agencies.
Provide education, training, and advice to staff, carers, and families regarding communication and swallowing needs.
Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care.
Professional Development
Maintain registration with the relevant professional regulatory body.
Participate in supervision, performance review, and continuing professional development activities.
Maintain and develop clinical competencies, including dysphagia competencies where applicable.
Adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and all HSE policies and procedures.
Qualifications
A recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the relevant professional body.
CORU registration
Experience
Experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist within a clinical setting.
Experience in the assessment and management of communication disorders.
Experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
Dysphagia competencies and experience in the assessment and management of adults and/or children with swallowing difficulties.
Skills and Competencies
Excellent assessment, clinical reasoning, and intervention skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritise workload effectively.
Competence in maintaining clinical records and reports.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
