Overview
Manage and co-ordinate the distribution centre's fleet activities.
Develop and implement strategies to provide a level of service that meets or surpasses expectations.
Ensure the fleet is maintained to the required standard and meets all statutory and legislative requirements while balancing business needs against costs, budgets and delivery schedules.
Responsibilities
Provide a comprehensive Fleet Management service to Site Management in line with central policies
Manage contractors, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness to meet operational requirements
Assist the Distribution Manager with formulating annual budgets
Keep aware of industry standards and new design developments; recommend efficiency and cost improvements
Influence and coach depot personnel to improve fleet efficiency
Control maintenance and repair procedures for commercial vehicles
Maintain Health and Safety policies for equipment use
Advise and audit Site Control procedures for safe and legal operation of commercial vehicles
Advise and support sites in actions required to complete accident repairs to meet insurers' requirements
Ensure full compliance with our O-licence
Schedule all equipment for service or repairs
Ensure daily equipment availability meets operational needs
Control maintenance invoices and raise purchase orders
Communicate with suppliers to minimise equipment downtime
Carry out minor defect repairs and check/agree defects
Challenge suppliers on repair times and cost; monitor cost centre budgets
Hold supplier meetings and monitor Health & Safety compliance by supplier staff on site
Maintain vehicle history files and ensure regulatory compliance
Provide cost analysis to the Transport Manager to support cost reduction
Profile
Experience in a fleet supervisory/management role
Calm under pressure with good planning and organisational skills
Strong Health & Safety awareness and a drive to improve performance
Proven track record of meeting service and cost commitments
Innovative, forward-thinking, and able to identify opportunities for improvement
Team player with strong collaboration and communication skills
Attention to detail and ability to deliver against challenging targets and budgets
Experience in unionised environments
Flexible approach to working hours to meet business needs
Experience in HVG mechanical maintenance and contract negotiation
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 5+ years of related experience
HGV Class 1 licence (Essential)
HND or City & Guilds (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering (Essential)
Experience with Microsoft packages – Intermediate level (Desirable)
Awareness of current and pending industry legislation and developments (Essential)
