Senior Engineer Bridges - Transport

Purpose & Scope of the Role
As a Senior Bridge Engineer within our Transport and Civils division, you will lead the delivery of complex bridge projects across Ireland and the UK.
This role involves managing design packages for major highways, rail, and urban infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with Irish and UK standards, and maintaining technical excellence throughout the project lifecycle.
You will act as a technical lead within multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior engineers, and uphold quality assurance and BIM procedures.

Your Impact
In the short term you will deliver design packages for large-scale transport projects, mentor designers, and support project management and resource planning.
Over the medium term you will take ownership of new projects, managing them through inception, design, construction and handover, while driving innovation and maintaining compliance with the latest standards.
In the long term you will progress into senior leadership within the Transport and Civils sector, shaping strategy, identifying new opportunities, and strengthening client relationships through a portfolio of successfully delivered projects.
Core Capabilities
Bridge Design Standards and Structural Analysis: excellent knowledge of the structural Eurocodes and Irish and UK bridge design standards (DMRB); strong background and understanding of the analysis of bridges and structures; proficiency using structural analysis software – experience with Midas Civil is beneficial.
Bridges & Structures Design Expertise: deep technical knowledge and hands-on experience in the design / assessment of a variety of bridges and civil structures, including reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and steel or steel-composite bridges; ability to mentor junior colleagues and provide guidance and assistance in relation to the technical delivery of bridge designs.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement: technical lead for the bridge team in internal multi-disciplinary design teams; coordination of design packages with other disciplines and teams, both internal and external to RPS; technical contact for clients, local authorities and external consultants – leading design meetings, resolving technical queries and translating complex engineering concepts into clear, actionable outcomes; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Technical Documentation and Contract Knowledge: production of high-quality technical documentation (e.g. technical acceptance, approval in principle) and reports that meet internal standards and external regulatory requirements; good working knowledge of typical contract forms and in particular the GCCC suite of Public Works Contracts; considerable experience in the preparation of contract documents for transportation infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on bridge design / rehabilitation projects.
Qualifications and Experience
Level 8 Honours Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Minimum of 7 years' relevant experience in bridges and structures engineering.
Working towards Chartered status (CEng, MIEI, MICE, MIStructE or equivalent).
Desirable: Level 9 Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, Chartered Engineer status, experience in bridge inspections, project management and knowledge of NEC contracts.
